"Our boys are being abused by the media in a different way"

Although I currently live in the UK, I occasionally switch over to the American news channels to get a look at how the yanks are reporting current events. Luckily enough, I was able to catch the end of the “O’Reilly factor” on Fox news, and was quite surprised by what I saw.

Although I was still unaware of what was actually being discussed, one of the guests on the show – Rebecca Hagelin, raised a thoroughly good point, albeit very briefly. It went something like this:

“Our boys are being abused by the media in a different way. … All you have to do is turn on the TV for 30 minutes and tell me how men and dads are portrayed as ignorant and stupid and lazy. “

I couldn’t believe it. Very, very seldom do you hear anything of this nature being discussed in the media, especially given the fact that it is so fixated on providing us with the next politically correct scoop. Infact, if I remember correctly, the issue the show was actually dealing with, was the rise in lesbian type behaviour amongst younger girls. The other guest, herself a lesbian, was arguing that this was nothing more than the result of our sexist (read: male dominated) society dictating to girls how to act out boy’s ultimate fantasies (of course, what else could it be?...). Thinking that this would just turn into another man bashing dialogue, I was considering turning over, as we read enough of this garbage in the newspapers everyday. I was more than delighted, and quite taken back therefore when Rebecca bought her point up.

Although happy that this issue had been raised, I didn’t give too much thought to it, but it turns out that a lot of others did. This woman has received a “huge” response from individuals who are fully aware of how men, and especially white men (the least politically correct demographic) are treated by the media, and who appear to be pissed off with the current state off affairs, with the constant man bashing it so proudly promotes.

The follow up article to this TV appearance can be found here, and makes for interesting reading.

By the way, she encourages you to email your thoughts on the matter, so I’d recommend you do it!
