Swimmers drive disabled Iraq war veterans out of pool - in case their appearance scares children
Injured soldiers who lost limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan have been jeered out of a public swimming pool.
Two women complained that the soldiers would scare children and that they should not be given precedence over paying customers.
The unpleasant scenes broke out at Leatherhead Leisure Centre in Surrey as the servicemen, from Headley Court Military Hospital, were starting a weekly swimming therapy session.
They have to use the 25-metre public pool because the hydro-pool at the defence rehabilitation centre is not big enough for swimming.
The incident has led to widespread condemnation. Admiral Lord Boyce, a former head of the Armed Forces, said the women should be "named and shamed".
He said: "These people are beneath contempt and everything should be done to get their names and publish them in the press.
"It is contemptible that people who have given their limbs for their country should be so abused when they are trying to get fit again."
One women in her thirties was said to be infuriated by the lane closures while others allegedly complained that limbless servicemen were scaring children at the pool.
It comes after calls for the public to do more to welcome home troops from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Headley Court itself was at the centre of a bitter row this summer when neighbours objected to plans to build accommodation for patients' families.
More than 43,000 people signed a petition of support and more than 600 sent letters to Defence Secretary Des Browne, who backed the plan, which won council approval in August.
The campaign to extend the hospital was led by Sue Norton, 36, wife of Captain Peter Norton, a bomb disposal expert treated at the clinic after he was injured in Iraq.
Supporters of the charity accused residents who objected of betraying Britain's war heroes.

Re: (Female) Swimmers drive disabled Iraq war veterans out of pool
Its just sick that people could show such disrespect for people who bled for their freedom, the problem with today's society is that they take freedom for granted, when it can be taken away from them so easily, war veterans should be given a place in society above that of the usual jackoffs and slackers, and women seem to not comprehend what Respect is, no woman has ever held respect for anything(yes I AM generalizing), which is one of the numerous reasons why our society is so fucked up these days.

Good to hear though, that a lot of Brits are not putting up with it.
Also: much to the dismay of the political left, the Dutch soldiers in Afghanistan are quite popular with the Dutch people.

First off, I think it's complete BS that we're fighting over *there* for our freedom...shoot, our freedoms are being stripped by our government. The Patriot Act does damage to the Fourth Amendment and the Military Commissions Act of 2006 kills habeas corpus, and that's for starters.
Now--that having been said, why shouldn't these guys be allowed to swim? They've done their duty being Bush's cannon fodder, give 'em a break already!

The sooner women comprise 50% of front line forces the better. When they come home maimed and without a limb they went with, you'll soon see the pools being closed to the public to let them swim without the embarassment of being 'looked at' by the hoi poloi.
As for the women and the 'naming and shaming' that Admiral Lord Boyce, (friggin' wanker fishead who has done his time presided over the scandal of only men having to carry the military maiming burden) calls for, he knows full well that they can't be named because they are the same women he as sent men to die for as they won't fight for their country. We can't have the kiddies ashamed of their mums, now can we? It might damage their self-esteem.
Equal maiming, I say. And investment in white feathers for female cowards.

Just any case anyone got the idea that Im one of those patriotic nutjobz who likes bush as a president and support this war, Im just going to correct anyone who may have that Idea.I would probaly go into the Conservative Isolationist group, Im against fucking with the rest of the world , I was against about every war we've fought, except for the Revolutionary war of course, and know that this so-called Iraq War poses no threat to our freedom, and its basically just the elite using the chaos of a war torn country to push their own goals, Ive been against George Bush, and I havent voted in five years because all the canidates just suck, and I made a mistake in referring to these soldiers as fighting for freedom, I wasnt really focusing on the war, but on how those men could be disrespected like that.
anyhow, just wanted to clear up somethings, in case anyone got the wrong impression from my wrong choice of words.

Re: (Female) Swimmers drive disabled Iraq war veterans out of pool
As soon as this despicable news story became publicised in the UK media (amazingly they even published it in that well known anti-male pro-female rag the Daily Telegraph - female sub-editor and large female journalistic staff!) I sent an e-mail to the editor of the newspaper local to where this whole affair occurred - the LEATHERHEAD ADVERTISER, in Surrey. I strongly urged the newspaper to ensure that these vile women are rooted out and then named and shamed in their paper.
Surprise! Surprise! - I have so far not received any reply. I wonder why........
If the jeerers, mockers and protesters at that swimming pool had been male I'm pretty well sure we would now know who they were and that they had been banned from ever using that pool again.

Re: (Female) Swimmers drive disabled Iraq war veterans out of pool Alexandra & Groobz,
I am speaking as myself and NOT as an admin of AM.
It would be much appreciated if you'd watch your tongues so to speak. There are a few of us here that are Veterans, Vets of this War, and this administration that you so loath. This is not a threat of any kind, I am just expressing my deep sorrow and somewhat resentment with your sentiments and callous opinions. Opinions that are, IMO, not based upon facts but bullshit media sound bites.
As a matter of fact, take this however you want, but I am not going to sit here and 'listen' to it without saying something.

Re: (Female) Swimmers drive disabled Iraq war veterans out of pool
I hate to see anyone leave here but I am not going to shed any tears at your departure especially with that parting remark.
And to all of you who say that our soldiers aren't fighting for freedom. Every American soldier in every war we have been in faught for freedom. The government may not have sent them there for freedoms sake but our soldiers themselves faught for our freedom and the freedoms of other people. I am sure the British and Australian soldiers I served with feel the same way.
Sometimes in global politics you have to fight for what seems to be an insignificant reason to let potential enemies know that we are not to be fucked with lightly.Chevalier.
