Why do you consider it a candidate for Most Manly Movie?

    Tyrael,
I'm not sure I would associate Top Gun with being a manly movie, sure it had manly things in it, but it also had Tom Cruise and he has been on Oprah's show, frequently.
Your opinion may differ in this respect.

    However,
Not sure if this counts, but who could forget "Blazing Saddles"?
If not for it's sheer un-PC'ness.

    Re: Most Manly Movies

The manliest movies? Don't mind if I do...

Cross Of Iron - Exploration of the male province of War, how corrupting the urge to establish oneself among peers can be and how men are used to feed other men’s lust for power and glory. A good man is destroyed so that an untested coward can make a name for himself as a war-hero; a movie that deals with what Percy might refer to as 'stealing another mans armour,' a practise which goes on today on an almost industrial scale as politicians make names for themselves as crusaders against misogyny by ruining the lives of men.

Robocop - A good man, father and husband, is brutally savaged in the line of duty before he is turned into a machine who's only purpose is the protection of a society that cares not one jot for his needs; he is then made an enemy of for being nothing more than the very thing his society demanded. Despite its somewhat silly premise it can be seen as a powerful allegory for how men are dehumanised in order to have the role of social protector and state-muscle thrust upon them.

Gran Torino - The main character (initially) almost seems to typify those obnoxious femi-rants that shade of 'men are no longer required,' but then we clearly see old fashion male stoicism still is a superb form of cultural currency whenever things become less than ideal. It is the old man whom nobody liked who everyone turns to for protection in violent times, and all the while he spends time making something of a delinquent boy through rough mentorship. Whatever is said about men being 'obsolete,' they will always be needed to make new men, to train them to their positive masculinity and to be the rock of calm or safety in times of fear or violence.

Captain's Courageous - There is no complex allegory or deep symbolism here it is a simple story of a foppish brat who is redeemed by the company of some rough but good men. This movie is very emotional and hammers home simple points about the value of role-models, the importance of a father to a son and is a tribute to men who risk their lives in dangerous work. Contains a particularly fantastic scene when the boy (Harvey) is talking to Manuel about fathers and claims Manuel's father did nothing for him because he left him no money; the reply I won't spoil but it is the sort of sentiment I think rarely crosses the mind of star-chamber bureaucrats who think child support is a father's only valid contribution.

Starship Troopers gets an honorary mention simply for being a sci-fi film set in the distant future in which the line '... After the social scientists brought our world to the brink of destruction,' is used. I think it's a prophecy that most MRAs can well appreciate the sense in!

Well I could write a whole lot more, really, a huge amount but I will not, not just now. This has given me an idea though since I've wanted to do a movie review blog for some time and I think perhaps I will now make one that deals (at least partly) with men in film along with other political questions.

I know this isn't exactly a movie but, figured I'd put it here. How about the CW show, Supernatural? I for one, love this show like mad and I love the relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester.

As for movies, there's that old one Glory, with Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. I, Robot imo as well... can't think of any others that haven't been said yet... hmm.

In Like Flint - which is not only a fine movie in itself, but also contains the winner of the 'Greatest Feel Ever Copped' award - a nameless extra in a sailor helmet who opportunistically grabs an unscripted handful of a bikini clad former bad girl / pleasure unit - as they haul them out of cans that were sent over a waterfall by Flint to escape an island he blew up, and from which he high dives. Ahem.

The true high point of Amerikan Cinema, all else is dross.
