I Thought Royal Ascot Was About Horse Racing. | |
It's Royal Ascot time this week, and silly me, I thought it was about horse racing, but it turns out I was wrong.
Personally, I'm not interested in horse racing, but I thought I'd point out the way it's been advertised and discussed on TV recently.
On the BBC, who are showing live coverage, they ran an advert before it started, in the advert it shows a few fancy cars, good looking men in suits and tuxedos, and lots and lots of women in fancy clothes, you know, the big silly hats and such, but absolutely no horses or even a mention of horses, and to top it off, the voice-over at the end of the advert says "Royal Ascot, the place to be seen". The place to be seen? Sorry, but isn't it supposed to be a sport?
On ITV, they were discussing it on a daytime show, and again, not one mention of horses or jockeys, instead, the whole discussion was about clothing, what people were wearing, what they weren't allowed to wear etc.
It's a clear indication of sport being handled in such a way so as to appeal to women, but if they don't like it, then tough, no such measures should be taken just so women like it.
It reminds me of the way they changed the snooker recently, in the good old days (I'm only 33) when there wasn't a game on, they'd show you footage of a game previously unseen, or maybe a few trick shots or out-takes, all snooker related. Now when there isn't a game on, we get to see where the snooker players go for a haircut or what there wardrobe looks like or where there wives go shopping, absolutely nothing to do with snooker at all.
I just hope and pray that women don't get their hands on football and decide that that too, has to be "sexed up".
