Re: Hunting and Fishing
partridge, ducks, geese, moose, deer and the odd black bear if he should get a little to close for comfort and i fish freshwater as often as possible.
would post some pics of some of my successful hunts but files are to big to upload
i should add timber wolves and coyotes(only if they get a little to brave)-i actually have a den of coyotes behind my house somewhere and they don't seem to bother anyone but hey sure are loud and can make your spine tingle when they are howling and u know they are right there but u can't see themLast edited by outdoors; 2nd-August-2009 at 01:12 PM.

Re: Hunting and Fishing
I haven't seen anyone get a bear since I was a kid. I do remember the taste of fresh venison and the process of skinning the deer. Rabbit was the best of them all. It does taste like chicken.

Re: Hunting and Fishing Yeah,
I must say I'm a fan of both of these sports.
Having said that, I'm probably more of a fisherman than a hunter these days.
For one thing, it's getting harder to get access to land to hunt on over here.
What land that hasn't been "ear-marked" for trampers (ie: no firearms), is too damn dangerous to traverse.
Even owning firearms has got a lot more expensive since I first started hunting when I was 14, using my grand-fathers rifles.
A firearms licence only cost $45 back then, when we all got the "life-time licence" in 1993, it cost $75, mine is due to expire next year and it will cost me $123.75, for a 10 year licence (that's if they don't change it to a 5 year licence, as has been mentioned here).
On the fishing side of things, I quite regularly head down to the beach early on a Saturday morning (work permitting) and see what I can haul up.
I'll never take more than a couple of fish at once anyway, anything else is just greedy.
You are usually down there by yourself, which is good because it's nice and quiet and you are able to think straight, my phone stays at home when I'm at the beach.
Best thing about surf-casting here, is you don't need a licence, so as long as you've got all the basic gear, it's free!

Re: Hunting and Fishing Went fishing this afternoon and hauled in a couple of decent sized sharks.

A lot of people say that shark meat is poisonous or is full of mercury, these sorts of comments are totally unfounded.
Actually the default type of fish that most fish and chip shops use is shark.
Best thing about sharks is, you don't have to fillet them.
There's actually a surprising amount of meat on a shark, there's two of them in my freezer as I speak.

Re: Hunting and Fishing
You caught a shark? That's pretty cool.
The most I ever caught was trout and that was like 6 years ago with my father. lol

Re: Hunting and Fishing Nyrah Ghost,
Shark meat has a flavour all of it's own, it sort of has a slightly sweet taste, but not as sweet as say crab or lobster meat,
It's also very similar in texture to crab meat, provided it's cooked properly.
One thing you can do with shark meat (and indeed most fish) is make a salad out of it with lemon juice as part of the sauce, the lemon juice will actually cook the shark meat.
A fair bit of Polynesian cuisine is based upon this concept.
It's also pretty good wrapped up in some aluminium foil with some herbs and a chopped onion and thrown either on a fire or on the BBQ.
Personally I like mine battered (with a coating of egg yolk, then into some white flour, back into the yolk and then the flour again) and then into a hot pan with vegetable oil, couple of minutes on each side, done.
Nice with some home-made wedges and some tartare sauce.
{Edit: however though, don't for God sakes ever over-cook shark, it will turn from perfectly edible to shoe leather in a matter of seconds if you don't keep your eye on it.
I can't honestly see why shark isn't eaten more, it's good stuff}Last edited by MikeT; 13th-January-2011 at 12:27 PM.
