Yes, it's Winter here... more rain than anything.

The new place is excellent.

I just got three rooms carpetted last week - very tiring job. My living room is fantastic! I've had some real good luck in getting started.

When I moved in, I had nothing except a table & four chairs (the table had no bolts as they'd vanished in the move), a bed and one glider/rocking chair.

I now have carpet down, a three peice suite, a television (for when my kids come over more than me), a vhs/dvd combo, small hi-fi (but excellent as it plays USB pens too and has DAB radio), a kettle, toaster, microwave, cooker, new working table (drop leafs), sofa bed & single bed for when my kids come over, tiled loo floor, couple shelves in bathroom, coffee maker (yay!!!) and...and... well, let's just say I've practically got a full home now.

There's a lot of camera's here too - one right outside my door, one just by the elevator, one inside the elevator, two outside (on the ground floor) and then one moving camera on the walls outside the exit doors.

I seem to have a made a new friend. The cameras are operated by a 24hr team, and one of them began 'waving' at me (shaking camera side to side). Then one day as I came out of the lift, he spoke - scared the shit out of me!

It's a one way voice system, so I got the laptop out and used a large font to write back to him.

We having a chat about nothing, when he suddenly asked "is your number still 015xx xxxxxx" which was freaky. The next thing, my phone rang!

So we got talking, his name's Bill and an ex police biker. He now leaves his camera pointing on my bike so and even sometimes open the front doors for me (to the complex, not my home) and calls the lift.

It is genuinely weird! LOL but a good weird.

That's just a tad freaky for my liking.
It's almost like Big Brother-enhanced.

Oh it is definately big brother, and I generally am averse to such things - but on this occasion it's helping to keep the area crime free (even though my garage was broken into only down the road a few months back).

I rather like having a 'friend' behind the camera who's looking out for me to some degree.

It's actually a really run-down area. The big brother has been applied because of the crime rate here. Since the camera's were installed, the complex is now nice & quiet, doesn't smell of urine anymore and needles aren't found all over the place.

That's very scary. The UK is one of the countries with the highest security camera density per citizen (or something along those lines).

I understand if it's to protect a building or housing, but there's no need for exaggeration. The fear of living in a police state where you're watched 24/7, that they know almost everything you do comes to mind.

The way I see it, is this area (three apartment complexes) are notorious for crime - and I can recall coming in here to see people when I was much younger. The place used to stink of drugs & urine and what not, you'd find needles in the stairs and such like - it was a hell hole.
Now, with a camera per electronic door, per elevator, per floor (2 - 1 by elevator doors and one by one door of each floor pointing at stair doors), as well as one either side to monitor the road sides by the complexes - there is hardly any crime now. The place doesn't smell, it doesn't have needles everywhere and it's generally pleasant - there's no fear walking around the area.

To me, this is a good move.

What I don't like, is cameras in the middle of town serving no purpose aside from gawping at shoppers and such.
