Oven Pride advert mocking men was 'not sexist', watchdog rules

The article speaks for itself. Of course the ad is silly, and plays on a stereotype, and everyone gets that. But I can't help but wonder what the finding would have been had the stereotype and gender been reversed. (Who else here gags every time they write that word, 'gender'?)

    Quote:

A television advert which plays on the stereotype that men are incapable of doing domestic chores has been cleared as not sexist by advertising watchdogs.

    By Murray Wardrop

    Last Updated: 12:59AM BST 20 May 2009

The Oven Pride advert promoted a cleaning product using the phrase "so easy, even a man can do it".

It prompted 673 complaints from viewers, most of whom said that the advert was offensive because it suggested men were stupid and lazy.

Other opponents said that the commercial was discriminatory, alleging that it suggested that cleaning was usually a woman's job.

However, the Advertising Standards Authority has now ruled that most viewers would see the advert as light-hearted, and did not uphold the complaints.

The commercial shows a man reluctantly cleaning an oven, as a disapproving woman looks on.

The man rolls his eyes and looks defeated until he is presented with the Oven Pride product which he then uses to get the job done quickly, under the gaze of the woman.

The advert ends with a voice-over saying "Let Oven Pride do its thing so he can do more" – at which the man looks aghast and the woman smiles and adds: "so easy, even a man can do it."

A final strapline read: "Note: No men were harmed in the making of this commercial."

HomePride Ltd, which makes the product, said that sales of Oven Pride has risen by 100 per cent since the advert was aired.

In its ruling the ASA said: "We noted that the ad used mild humour to refer to traditional gender stereotypes but considered that the overall impression was such that it did not portray either gender in a way that stigmatised, humiliated or undermined them by using harmful stereotypes.
"We noted some might consider the humour in the ad in poor taste but concluded that it was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence."
Matt Stockdale, HomePride managing director, said: "This is a great common sense decision. Twenty-seven million people have seen the advert on TV.

"We know that the majority of people have taken the advert in the context it was intended, as sales of Oven Pride have gone up 100 per cent since it went on TV."

He added that Clearcast, the company responsible for the pre-transmission examination and clearance of television advertisements, approved the commercial before it aired.

Mr Stockdale said: "The advert was originally cleared by Clearcast, saying it was 'clearly pantomime, slapstick and very silly'."

    Thanks Kelly for sharing this.

I often wonder if anyone thinks about the ovens cleaned in restaurants?

I know a guy who has big contracts cleaning commercial ovens.

I also knew a guy 10 years ago who put an ad in the newspaper to clean domestic ovens.

Advertising is about making money and to me, they use our own stupidity. Fancy this ad making great money. I guess one could argue that men sell better domestic products.

People complain "This is 'sexist', or it's offensive!" Then they get indignant that they are ignored or overruled. The old saw goes like this, if you're being raped - yell "Fire!". You'll be more likely to get a response.

Tell them, this is a turn-off. It doesn't portray your product in a desirable light. It makes me not want to purchase your product. "It doesn't sell!"
"I'm switching to your competitor ... and advising others to do the same!"

in Australia in New South Wales where I live there is one of these feminit traps called the NSW Advertising Standards Board

of course any advertisement that portrays men in a ridiculous light is passed as suitable for general viewing however no wimyn are presented in a demeaning light as multitudes of feminits would snow their office with protest letters jam their switchboards and spam their internet site

Yes ads are about making money and they use our own stupidity.

Yet the bottom line is, in the world of advertising, you can't offend women in the process of making money and exploiting human stupidity.

What you are saying is a generalisation and it is obvious. It's not the main point of the OP.

Sporadic "poor taste" in the media directed at a specific group (in this case men) can usually be diluted by the preponderance of the diverse subject matter that is awash within.

However, when that particular "poor taste" dominates media portrayals and begins to unduly influence the perceptions and attitudes of it's viewers towards that group, it can no longer be conveniently played down as just being 'clearly pantomime, slapstick and very silly'." It has then transcended into undermining social equilibrium.

    Quote:
HomePride Ltd, which makes the product, said that sales of Oven Pride has risen by 100 per cent since the advert was aired.
And then when you factor in the profiteering from portraying men negatively, you can be assured that many will vehemently defend a double standard!

Re: Oven Pride advert mocking men was 'not sexist', watchdog rules

673 complaints... um... not that many is it? mind you, then... then i saw this:

    Quote:
    'Take Courage' beer advert banned

The advertising watchdog upheld three complaints about the beer adverts

A poster showing a nervous man alongside the slogan "Take Courage my friend" has been banned for suggesting the beer could boost confidence.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it acknowledged the poster's message was meant to be humorous, but concluded it broke advertising rules.

The campaign aimed to echo the Courage beer adverts of the 1950s to 1980s.

The brewers, Wells & Young's, said the slogan was simply a "call to action" to choose Courage over other beers.

The "Take Courage" slogan was revived earlier this year for a series of posters, one of which showed a man with a pint of beer looking worried, as a woman modelled a figure-hugging dress with its sales tags still attached.

The ASA upheld three complaints from people who argued the image of the man with a glass of beer clearly implied it would give him enough confidence to tell the woman the dress was not flattering.

    Infamous line

But Courage's Bedford-based brewers said they believed the poster depicted a scenario many men could relate to and that it did not imply the beer would give the man courage, change his mood or give him confidence.

Chris Lewis, the firm's marketing director, said the company had been "very surprised" by the ASA's decision to ban the advert.

"Our intention through this advertising is to portray humorous everyday occurrences which Courage drinkers can relate to," he said.

"Every man with some life experience has been in the situation where they have been asked the infamous line: 'Does my bum look big in this?' And as every man in Britain knows, the correct response is 'No!'

"It is because this is universally understood that we did not put these words on the poster."

He added that the company had cleared the adverts with relevant industry bodies and had worked closely with the ASA to resolve the issue.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7999250.stm

    and the ASA ruling:

    http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/adjudications/non_broadcast/Adjudication+Details.htm?Adjudication_ id=46125

    with the interesing line:

    Quote:
Three members of the public believed the poster implied that the beer would give the man confidence to either make negative comments on the woman's appearance or take advantage of her.

Clearly the kind of world where 3 women (probably) are taken more seriously than 673 men (probably).

    Let's see:
Who invented the oven, a man or a woman?
Who fixes the oven when there's a basic problem, the husband or the wife?
If it's a serious problem, who comes to fix the oven, a repairman or a repairwoman?
If men invent and repair things such as oven, it only stands to reason that we can clean them!
What's more, I can't think of any household chore that a woman does that a man cannot do also. Can anyone? Granted, women tend to care more about cleanliness and men about repairs. The chores that women tend to do free men to do other things, things that women can't do or do as easily. They are not chores that men are incapable of doing.

    Here's an "interesting" commercial:

I wonder if the makers of this commercial have ever heard of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers? How would the public react to a similar commercial that had a tag line such as, "Red Stripe- teaching our Black friends to read for over 70 years!!" Discrimination sells as people like to discriminate.

I have a problem with this kind of discrimination, not because it offends me, it doesn't, I can laugh at myself, but it annoys me that there's a lack of an even playing field, for example "White Men Can't Jump" is fine, but "Black Men Can't Swim" would be offensive.

There's a dick on YouTube who has a video called "Dance Like A White Boy", it's a song having a go at the "fact" that white men can't dance, I commented to him asking if a song entitled "Invent Like A Black Boy" or "Obey The Law Like A Black Boy" would be acceptable, the two-bit wankpiece removed my comment and didn't answer me, the racist cunt.
