Male pill: Big pharma not interested

Quote:
German drug giant Bayer has officially stopped research and development of a hormonal male contraceptive, yet another sign that the pharma industry has lost interest in developing the so-called 'male pill.'

Bayer had previously indicated it would stop the programme, but company officials confirmed the decision this week at a meeting in Leverkusen, Germany.
The Rest Is Here.

Now that is a shit... especially when our poll indicates that most men are in favour of it. I guess that speaks volumes.

Re: Male pill: Big pharma not interested

So, why would they back off from a potentially multi-million dollar product??

More fool them, somebody, somewhere in the world will pick up the research.

The traditional male weapons in the sex war are non-cooperation and flight. The traditional female weapon is celebration of paternity and male responsibility. If women now choose to define this as patriarchal oppression, they are throwing away their best trick. Feminism, in dismantling patriarchy, is simply reviving the underlying greater natural freedom of men. - Geoff Dench 1998 (edited)

Re: Male pill: Big pharma not interested

They probably got threats from feminists. And I'm sure they took it seriously as women spend more on medication than men do.

Re: Male pill: Big pharma not interested

from what I have heard, its very difficult to get a medication that has no side effects..

testosterone is a good contraceptive for men, but it makes them more aggressive and i heard that one pill worked ok until the user drank alcohol, then it turned their eyes red!

I think that at the end of the day, good old johnny durex is simply the best we can get, and no doubt it is also a doubly good means of lowering the risk of dickrot etc..

What would be a good idea would perhaps be some form of "reversible vasectomy"..

Surely that would be pretty good?

Not that I would ever consider anything other than the good old "english riding coat".. Mind you, abstenance is always the best way to avoid not only pregnancy and vd, but also being tricked into crappy relationships!

Re: Male pill: Big pharma not interested

Bah, come on, no evil feminists had anything to do with it. Benefit-cost analysis more likely.

Re: Male pill: Big pharma not interested

I too doubt it was anything to do with feminism that ceased the researching.
However, had it been a female pill (and imagine men currently had the top pills), then they would be demanding the research continues - and so it would.

Re: Male pill: Big pharma not interested

I think its resonable to assume some major problems were coming into play during the testing procedure. While a female birth control pill is simple, one simply places hormones that are natural to the body to inhibit ovulation (estrogen and progestin), I can see developing a male pill would be less simple as there is no natural cycling. Sperm is produced constantly and as thus there are a lot more major side effects and health complications that it could produce. Even the female pill, though based on normal body hormones, is yet to be perfect in this regard.

Last I heard, a botany prof of mine told me the research being done was looking into papya extracts and some success had been made in male mice. However, at that point in time (this was only last year), there were still concerns about long term infertilitiy problems that a drug like this could cause.

Regardless, I do hope another research firm or university picks up the efforts. It would be worthwhile to have the extra protection.

Thanx for the information ALJ and for finding this thread. I didn't know they had stopped this research.

That's the same old LIE that feminists have been spewing to men for more than half a century. The minuscule amount of research that has been done in contraceptives for men since 2000 show that it's not only a LIE, it's BACKWARD. Developing pills for men is easier than the many that women have to choose from. The big difference is blatant sexism against men.

Year after year, decade after decade, feminist pump out those same old LIES and LIES and LIES, OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

And frankly Toots, lots of us get really ANGRY when we hear femiNazi pushing their same old tired LIES.

Blessings

Bob
