I got rejected from the Big Brothers and Sisters Club

This isn't a raw deal on the magnitude of the others in this area, but it's a raw deal all the same. I applied to the BB&S, and recieved a rejection letter Saturday. It's got me down, I figured I could make a difference. I called the office and asked why I'd been rejected, and they said that they don't tell why. I have no criminal record, I even taught Sunday school (until I moved, now I'm a sub). I asked to talk to a manager, and she said that they didn't feel right about letting a single guy my age into the program, "Don't you think it's weird that a guy your age is single?" A shot of rage went through me, but I calmly replied, "No, no I don't." Then I hung up. She just called me a child molester. I might have tried to fight it, but I was rejected from a math tutoring program in another state because I "wasn't racially aware enough." I guess math has a racial component. It doesn't pay to fight these people.

My main question is, why is BB&S pulling advertisement spots on the radio and TV saying they need men desperately? I wonder if they are rejecting most of thier applicants? It seems to be male is to be an evil predator. Only without the cool mask thing and the shoulder lazer. To be male and single is to be viewed as a ticking time bomb of child molestation.

Cap'n Chunk (I love the name, BTW.), that sounds like quite a raw deal you got. You've got every right to be pissed and insulted. The tart on the phone, afterall, didn't say, "Don't you think it's weird that a PERSON your age is single?" She was targetting men, and only men, who have not yet submitted to the fetters of modern marriage. It would be tempting to respond to feminists like her by saying something such as, "Not it's not weird for rational men to still be single with only women like you to chose from!"

BTW, what does not being "racially aware enough" mean? That you're White?

This makes me absolutely furious. I wonder who one would go to if looking for a higher up? I honestly think you should follow up on this and go to the heads of the Big Brothers and Sisters organization. I would like to know if this is really their policy (and if so hear them explain the reasoning behind it) and if it isn't to let them know what local management is doing and find out what they plan on doing about it. If you're not interested in pursuing this, would you mind if I did so in behalf?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they determined that the best possible situation for children to be adopted into or fostered by is single women or lesbian couples.....none of that dangerous 'man' element.

Re: I got rejected from the Big Brothers and Sisters Club

My 'room mate' moved out a few weeks ago. I rent out a room to help pay my rent.

I phoned around the Salvos, the Anglican and Catholic Church organisations offering a room to a homeless man.

The Catholics only found accomodation for women. The Salvos kept all their homeless to themselves, otherwise delivering soup to the streets. The Anglicans had a long questionnaire for me to answer over the phone after which they could 'put me on a list' in case they had any homeless people come by. I was 'turned down' at question three because I smoke a friggin' pipe!

All such organisations get grants from the Guvcunts. The grants tie them to specific 'rules'. Those rules are anti-male.

God alone knows what rules they have for forgiving sins.

I have tried all my life to leave the place better than I found it.
But there are 6 billion other buggers out there messing it up.
I am outnumbered.
But...
YOU don't just make a difference,
you make THE difference.

Their website, www.bbbs.org , gives one the impression that they only want Black or Hispanic men for the male volunteers.

Re: I got rejected from the Big Brothers and Sisters Club

Well, I went to the website and, after noting the part where they say,

Quote:
Why do we need Big Brothers?
More than 70% of our children are waiting for a Big are boys, but only three out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men. Research shows that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes a real difference in the life of a boy. So join the millions of volunteers that give a young person someone to look up to and learn why so many are now saying, “I get back so much more than I give.”

in addition to reading through the site and not finding a single, solitary mention of not accepting people who are unmarried, I decided to send the following e-mail,

Quote:
Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing regarding a recent incidence involving the Big Brothers program. A man I’m acquainted with wanted to donate his time in some form of charitable works. Having always heard about Big Brothers, Big Sisters and having considered it a wonderful program, he decided to enroll as a big brother. After applying, he was told that he’d been rejected. Confused, he inquired of the local program manager as to the reason he’d been rejected. Her response was, “Isn’t it a little weird for guy your age to still be single?” She also told him that they didn’t feel good about letting a single man his age into the program.

Is this your general policy? If it is, does this same policy apply to women? Do you also not allow single women into the program as big sisters? It seems rather discriminatory to not allow someone to participate based on marital status and age, not to mention, if you do allow single women in the program, gender.

I appreciate your time and hope to hear from you soon on this matter.

Thank you.

So, we'll see what they reply back with.

Re: I got rejected from the Big Brothers and Sisters Club

As far as "racially aware" goes, yes I'd be considered white. I could apply for membership in the Ho'Chunk nation, but I don't want to be userous of my Native heritage. I was an engineering student in my 2nd year and I wanted to help high school kids with math. Unfortunately, I went for an inner-city position, and I'm guessing they only wanted people of a certain colour.

Where the BB&S is concerned, screw 'em. There's no point in fighting these people, and my job has moved me, so in a week, I'll be a hundred miles away. If they didn't want me because of my race, I would understand that, and I wouldn't care as much. It was the weird comment that was cutting. Of course, mabey this is just the local office manager that has the axe to grind. I'm interviewing for a mentorship program with my local parish, and they're going to contact the parish I'm going to. They should be much more friendly to me. The BB&S will get no reference from me.

Re: I got rejected from the Big Brothers and Sisters Club

This is the response I recieved.

Quote:
Kimberly,

Thank you for contacting us concerning the gentleman you know who was rejected.

Unfortunately, not knowing the circumstances or the agency to which this gentleman applied to volunteer, I am at a loss to provide a detailed response. In general, however:
  • BBBS affiliates should not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status or disability, per our Standards of Practice.

If an affiliate has done so, while the National Office does not have governance authority over any of our independently owned and operated affiliates, I can discuss the matter with the Executive Director and ask them to investigate to assure that a staff member is not discriminating. The National office does not have authority to overturn a decision to reject a volunteer; however I would want to discuss with the agency the assessment process they are using. They are responsible for protecting the confidentiality of anyone who applies to their agency, so they could not discuss any detail of the application or assessment with me.

If the staff person did respond to the gentleman as outlined in your email, then I would want that person’s supervisor to be made aware of how the situation was handled and what was communicated.

Please feel free to encourage your friend to contact me with the name of the agency that he applied to, if he would like me to follow-up with the Executive Director of that affiliate.

Thanks for letting us know,

Sandy Maskell, CSW
Agency Resource Center Director

According to this, they should NOT be discriminating by marital status, so it would appear the bias lies with that particular office and not the program in general. Anyways, here's the information if you decide you'd like to let them know who it was so they can investigate for discrimination.

I am discussing the BBBS on another board. I wonder if Captain Chunk would allow me to paste
