Quote: Bill to control macho behavior signed into law by Arias By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
President Óscar Arias Sánchez signed into law Thursday a controversial measure that provides stiffer sentences for the murder of women than of men and also makes insulting women a crime. The measure imposes six months to two years in prison for a man who ridicules or frightens his female companion. The penalty for killing a female companion is 20 to 35 years. The penalty for a typical murder is 12 to 18 years.
The bill was in the legislative hopper eight years, and periodically would be discussed, usually after some high profile crime in which a man killed his wife or close companion.
Among other things, the law protects women against "psychological aggression."
The law is seen as a reaction to the Latin macho culture, and it had the support of a number of women's organization and individuals.
Despite the constitutional minefields in the bill, few politicians were prepared to point them out. Arias said he was hoping for a change of heart among Costa Ricans and true equality and respect for women. | Link. Quote: |
ridicules or frightens his female companion
| Why in fuck sake can't a man or any other person have the right to ridicule or sometimes frighten a other person (in this case women)? This is also ultra sexist anti-male, because it only applies on men, with only women as victims. ~ A man needs a woman like a lion needs a stove. ~ ~ Women deserve only equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. ~ ~ Men are not collectively "guilty" of anything. ~ ~ Never needing to be pregnant is a blessing. ~ ~ Feminist ideology “men have to respect women, but women have no reason to respect men” ~ ~ Everybody makes choices, and nobody should be entitled to special treatment because of those choices. Equal results based on unequal treatment amounts to no kind of equality at all. ~ |
