Teachers’ Union Supports Female Teacher for Student Sex

Canadian Teachers Union NASUT defends female teacher who has sex with a student. This is insane! How many more double standards can we have before men truly rise up in arms!

The NASUWT says it is UNFAIR to treat teachers who have affairs with students who are over 16 as sex offenders, insisting all they are guilty of is an “error of professional judgement”. ..

In 2001 it became illegal for teachers to have any intimate or sexual affair with any pupil in their school under 18.

If found guilty of doing so, the teacher would face instant dismissal, be made to sign the sex offenders register and possibly face jail. But NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates told the Tonight show it’s wrong to criminalise these teachers.

She said: “This isn’t a person who is showing any tendencies for being a sex offender—this is a person who’s made a serious error of professional judgement.
“I don’t think they need to be criminalised by being put on a sex offenders register.”

“There is a real anomaly in the law that we are concerned about,” she added.
“If a teacher has a relationship with a pupil at the school at which they teach — it could be an 18-year-old pupil in the sixth form — then that teacher can be prosecuted and can end up on the sex offenders register.

“It does seem a step too far — when there has been a consensual relationship — to put that person on a sex offenders register when, in fact, they could have a perfectly legitimate relationship with an 18- year-old still enrolled at another school.”

Dean’s relationship with his teacher, who was 22 at the time, began when he was given a mobile phone by her for doing well in class.
It had one number on it—her own—and her texts quickly turned sexual. She arranged intimate meetings between lessons, swearing Dean to secrecy.
But after 18 months the strain got too much and he exposed the relationship.
Prentice received a suspended sentence and was made to sign the sex offenders register.

Dean said: “It affected me in a big way, my personality and things, and I started to do stupid things after it and not be myself.

“It took me a long time to get myself back together.”

I'll be honest, I'm kinda torn on this... I never understood why teachers were charged with sex-crimes for having sex with legal aged people. It never made sense.

But, on the other hand, when an older guy is with a younger girl - it's seen as him taking advantage... What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

What about the two underage children who both consent to sex yet the boy gets in trouble and slapped on the sex offenders register? What about the guy who decides he can't hold his bladder in anymore and nips behind a bush for a quick pee and gets slapped on the sex offenders register? If they can put those two examples on it then these teachers most definitely should be on it.

Also lets not forget the guy who got done for having sex with a bike the privacy of his own hotel room. Granted he probably wasn't right in the head but did he deserve to have his life ruined?

I know you aren't sticking up for them and sorry if this post seemed a bit angry, I just get dead fed up of double standards when it comes to this stuff.

First of all, I am against creating sex criminals based on age if both are past puberty. Many other societies, past and present, have the age of consent set much lower.

However, in regards to teachers. Teachers are in a position of power over students and sexual favors should not determine who gets the grade. It is a conflict of interest.

The real double standard here is that no one cared about the ridiculous age of consent laws UNTIL women wanted underage boys.

It should be gender neutral. If a guy goes after a young girl / student that is clearly wrong. It should be the same for the reverse. And the remedies /sanctions / penalties / sentences should be comparable.

Constantly I read about females getting soft sentences, maybe 1/3, of what men get for the same crime. Or no sentence at all.

There are many men in jail for years for doing what my exe did to me in terms of violence. Meanwhile in Family Court she was NOT EVEN SCOLDED. I later took her to civil court where I prevailed. Sadly that Judge was the head of the other Judges and was openly baffled why Family Court did not help me. Poor guy was clueless about what happens all the time literally in the next room over, 20 feet away.

I agree that women should get the same punishment as men.

I am saying the law itself is flawed BUT I still believe that as long as the law is in place, men and women should be sentenced the same.

So yes, we disagree. Lowered age of consent is one of my extreme positions that I doubt many will agree with me on. Yet, we also agree that the law, in it's current state, should be applied equally.

Yes I fully agree the law should treat both male & female "figures in positions of authority" the same... If men are shagging high-school females and having their lives ruined for it - so too should women.

Our current society generally condones women in this position and marginalizes the student's opposition, for evidence see the quotes I gave in post #4.

I'm saying, I don't think someone bumping uglies with a 16yr old (which is legal age of consent in England where I live) should be placed on a sex offenders list, but that goes BOTH ways - male and female tutors.

And though it makes one wonder 'wtf' when they hear of people having sex with bicycles and pavements or tables, putting them on the sex offenders list is most unreasonable. They may be a bit sexually dysfunctional, but offending who, exactly?
