Tory senator to women's groups: shut up
'If you push it, there'll be more backlash,' warns senator of abortion issue
Last Updated: Monday, May 3, 2010 | 5:08 PM ET Comments0Recommend8Karina Roman, CBC News
Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth told a meeting of international women's equality rights groups Monday morning that it would be best for them to "shut the f--k up" about their concerns over the government's maternal health initiative.

Ruth sponsored the meeting on Parliament Hill, in which groups such as the Association for Women's Rights in Development, Action Aid International and Action Canada for Population and Development participated in a panel discussion questioning Canada's leadership in the promotion of gender equality and women's rights.

With the recent controversy about the government's plans to omit funding for abortion from its maternal health policy for developing countries, the panelists said it was an issue they couldn't ignore at today's meeting.

However, during the question and answer period, Ruth advised the room that pushing the abortion issue was not the right strategy if they really wanted progress on the maternal health issue. Her comments were caught on tape by the Toronto Star.

"We've got five weeks or whatever left until the G8 starts. Shut the f--k up on this issue," she says. "If you push it, there'll be more backlash. This is now a political football. This is not about women's health in this country."

She went on to say, "Canada is still a country with free and accessible abortion. Leave it there. Don't make this an election issue."

Afterward, Ruth was asked about her comments. "I'm not going to repeat them in front of microphones. You gotta be crazy."

She explained that people are more worried about jobs and mortgages. "To deal with more altruistic things, even though I think we should, is perhaps not relative and not a seller right now."

"I think it is a mistake to make a public debate about abortion for the G8."

'Time to speak out is now'
Liberal MP Dr. Carolyn Bennett said Ruth's comments shocked the room. Bennett said she thinks Ruth's advice exposes something the government has denied — that for those who speak out against the government, there will be repercussions.

Funding cuts are one example of a repercussion the groups fear.

But the activists say they won't be taking Ruth up on her suggestion to keep quiet. Katherine McDonald is executive director of Action Canada for Populations and Development.

"The time to speak out is now. If we hadn't spoken out over the last three months, contraception would not be part of this initiative."

McDonald is referring to the government's reversal on its initial announcement that family planning would not be part of the maternal health plan.

Bennett echoed another panelist at the meeting, saying that women in the world didn't achieve what they have over the years by "shutting up."

No. Women simply worsened, ruined and destroyed things in this world because they refused to shut the hell up.

The more backlash, the merrier. Feminist are incapable of shutting up as they have this imbedded need to scream like harpies which overrides every bit of logic (if any).

Women's aid group loses federal funding

Executive director of Match International blames politics for decision

    CBC News

An Ottawa-based aid organization that supports women's rights in the developing world has had all its federal funding cut.
Match International has relied on government funding for 34 years to support programs that help women gain leadership skills and start their own businesses in countries such as Ghana, Mali and Tanzania. The group also works to prevent violence against women and female genital mutilation.
The non-profit organization has been getting about $400,000 a year — about 75 per cent of its budget — from the federal Canadian International Development Agency. The rest comes largely from charitable donations.
Match International's executive director, Kim Bulger, said the group is trying to figure out how it might continue its work despite the drastic cut.
International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda said the group lost its funding because of performance issues. However, that came as a surprise to Bulger.
"I think it's disingenuous," she said. "It was a political decision."
CIDA previously told the organization its proposal, which incorporated the agency's recommendations, was good, she added. The agency never requested additional performance information.
Bulger suggested the real issue was that CIDA itself was under scrutiny by the auditor general's office, which asked the agency to focus its work on fewer countries.
    Women's rights targeted: May

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May also suggested the funding cut was for ideological reasons. She thinks it's part of a larger government trend.
The federal government disclosed on April 26 that it will not fund abortions in its G8 child and maternal health-care initiative for developing countries.
However, May said Match International's loss of funding shows this is about more than just abortion.
"It got cut because it deals with gender rights and women in leadership. It's a sad day," she said. "Things are being cut out of the CIDA budget that work."
She also pointed to the case of Planned Parenthood International, another group that supports women's rights, including abortion as a reproductive choice. It has been without government funding since December. Prior to that, it received $6 million a year for three years.
The group's spokesman, Paul Bell, confirmed Tuesday that Planned Parenthood International has still not heard back about a funding renewal application submitted last June, which is unusual.
However, he noted that the group has not yet had any indication that its funding won't be renewed.

    Ruth's abortion comment 'intimidation': MPs

    Last Updated: Tuesday, May 4, 2010 | 5:56 PM ET Comments470Recommend235

    CBC News

Opposition MPs say Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth's advice to women's groups to "shut the f--k up" about the government's maternal health initiative shows the "culture of intimidation" created by the prime minister.
Senator Nancy Ruth speaks to the CBC after a meeting on Monday with international women's equality rights groups. (CBC) Leading off Tuesday's question period, Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae called Senator Nancy Ruth's comments the "pithiest, sharpest description" of Conservative policy he's heard in a while and paraphrased it for the House — minus the swear word.
"If you have a disagreement with the government, just shut the F up," Rae told MPs.
Speaking for the government while the prime minister travelled to Europe, Transport Minister John Baird said Ruth's language was "completely unacceptable and in no way, shape or form represents the view of the government."
    P.O.V.:
G8 abortion debate: Should it be on the agenda?

Baird then accused the Liberals of trying to divide Canadians through their plans to impose a "culture war," instead of getting behind the "admirable goal" of the government's maternal health plan.
"That is something Canadians can unite behind," he told MPs.
Opposition parties have accused the Conservatives of trying to reopen the abortion debate through its G8 maternal health initiative, which calls for a focus on nutrition and strengthening health-care systems in the developing world.
Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe said Ruth's comment "revealed the true face" of the government, since she is privy to what is said behind closed doors at Conservative caucus meetings.
"Will [Harper] finally come clean about his true intentions and admit he wants to reopen debate on abortion in Canada by putting an end to foreign funding?" he said.
Baird replied that Ruth does not speak for the government and reiterated that "no one" wants to reopen the abortion debate.
    Senator warned of 'backlash'

Ruth made the controversial remarks on Monday morning during a meeting she sponsored on Parliament Hill for international women's equality rights groups.
During the question and answer period, Ruth advised the room that pushing the abortion issue was not the right strategy if they really wanted progress on the maternal health issue. Her comments were caught on tape by the Toronto Star.
"We've got five weeks or whatever left until the G8 starts. Shut the f--k up on this issue," she said. "If you push it, there'll be more backlash. This is now a political football. This is not about women's health in this country."
She went on to say, "Canada is still a country with free and accessible abortion. Leave it there. Don't make this an election issue."
Last week, International Co-operation Bev Oda announced the federal government would consider funding family planning measures such as contraception in its G8 initiative, but not abortion under any circumstances.

Those retards will not be satisfied until the system pulls a 180 and really starts oppressing women. The sad part is that it's already happening slowly but steadily!

The Ad Hoc Coalition for Women’s Equality and Human Rights says the government war on women’s groups “is actually an attack on democracy in Canada.

“By defunding those women’s groups you are effectively silencing discussion . . . on women and women’s advocacy,” said Claire Tremblay, coordinator of the coalition, which represents about 30 organizations. .

Since 2006, Harper has cut funding for women’s advocacy by 43 per cent, shut 12 out of 16 Status of Women offices in Canada and eliminated funding of legal voices for women and minority groups, including the National Association of Women and the Law and the Courts Challenges Program, critics

    Women's group cuts 'ideological': MPs

    Last Updated: Wednesday, May 5, 2010 | 7:38 PM ET Comments110Recommend47

    CBC News

Opposition parties say the Conservative government has recently cut federal funding to more than a dozen women's groups because the organizations don't share Prime Minister Stephen Harper's ideology and dare to criticize his policies.
The Liberals circulated a list on Wednesday of groups that promote human rights, equality rights and anti-homelessness initiatives that have lost federal funding within the past two weeks. But the Conservatives say the groups were "inefficient" and the government is just making sure taxpayers get their money's worth.
During Wednesday's question period in the House of Commons, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said Harper's government has shown a pattern of attacking its critics in the wallet. He said the latest decision raises a bigger issue, which is whether the Conservatives respect democracy.
"These women have raised their voices and been punished for it and I think that's absolutely no way to have a relationship," Ignatieff told the House. "Can the prime minister commit to putting an end to this intimidation campaign and restore the funding of these groups?"
Replying for the government, Transport Minister John Baird said the Conservatives have given a "record amount" of funding to support women's groups and want "less talk and more action" to support and improve the lives of Canadian girls and women.
He also retorted that Ignatieff was himself hindering the democratic process by ordering MPs in his party to vote against a Conservative backbencher's bill to abolish the federal long-gun registry.
Earlier this week, Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth bluntly advised women's groups to "shut the f--- up" about abortion and the government's G8 maternal health initiative, saying public criticism was not the right strategy if they really wanted progress on the issue.
Last week, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda announced the federal government would consider funding family planning measures such as contraception in its G8 initiative, but not abortion under any circumstances.
Speaking in the House on Wednesday, Oda said Canadians who work hard want to make sure their tax dollars are "getting results" and ensure that "mothers and babies stay alive and have a better life."
"This isn't about entitlement to taxpayer dollars," Oda said. "It's about accountable use."
