    The end of the handyman

The end of the handyman: Now you've got to advertise for a handy person, says job center
The end of the handyman: Now you've got to advertise for a handyperson, says job centre | Mail Online

    By Sean Poulter

The politically correct would have us live in a world of ‘letter carriers’, ‘chairs’ and ‘coffee without milk’.
But who would they bring in to do odd bits and pieces around the house?
Job center staff provided the answer yesterday – a handy person.
The title was revealed after a property firm tried to advertise for an apprentice handyman.
A woman Job center worker suggested that the word was sexist and so would prevent young women from taking part in the selection process.

    Not cool.

Scorn and mockery towards men in need is one of the reasons feminism is dying as we speak!.

This is nothing new, the PCers have been trying to neuter the language for decades, at least partially. Terms such as 'gunman', 'conman' and 'manhunt' didn't seem to come under the scrutiny of political correctness. I wonder why.

'Handyman' has made a comeback and will survive because of one simple reason. It rolls off the tongue very easily.

It would be handy to have some women actually working as 'handy-persons'. But women seem reluctant to empower themselves in order for handy-persons to be other than just men.

    Or too idle.

How about a 'Quota' system with the Job Centre MAKING women become handy-persons.

Or perhaps a kick up the arse might help empower them.

I do not believe that this is what would primarily prevent women from taking part, because if they were to use the term handyperson instead, I doubt few if any women would apply because of their choice not to.

We don’t have the term mechanicman we say mechanic. Now if I were to post an advert in that job centre for a mechanic and not get any female applicants whilst getting many male applicants what do think would be ‘preventing’ them?

They must be employing too many idiotpersons in the job centres these days that have a PC manual instead of brains.

That's always the way. Equality... but only the good equality. Get rid of the sexist language which insinuates men have a monopoly on being handy. The language which insinuates that only men do anything bad can totally stay.

Like 'hitman' or 'the bad guy' or even 'fall-guy' and others alike. Yes, those can stay because they aren't sexist 'really' as it's only men they're stereotyping negatively.

I followed a link from the F4J thread and came across a lively and often spiteful discussion about its protest over Mumsnet's misandry. 'Cylux' gives a clue to the kind of double standards that prevail:

And btw (I’m on a roll here…) why does this site only delete ‘misogynist, racist, homophobic and xenophobic comments’ – what about misandrist comments?
    Cylux
Because those reinforce and propagate already existing systems of oppression, inequality and violence whereas misandrist, heterophobic and reverse-racist comments do not.

Wow. So basically, as a white straight male I should just shut up and deal with any prejudice I suffer, no matter how unfair and how injurious, because I’m somehow responsible for the actions of white straight male bigots? In fact, we shouldn’t even admit that prejudice against me is a possibility? It’s not a fucking competition, Cylux. Bigotry is wrong in all its forms.........

Racism against whites isn't reverse racism it is racism. Reverse racism implies some kind of inherent, worse form of guilt on the behalf of whites. It makes it seem like it is more rare than racism against non-whites. Some of the examples are just different and it depends on where you go.

Possibly, but I was commenting not on the F4J protest but on the mindset behind the kinds of double standards that have lead to the selective censoring of our language.

Get this, someone in the states actaully pushed to get the word "brainstorm" changed to "thought showers" because they believed the word was offensive to the mentally retarded.

So, if a woman got a job doing odd jobs around the house, she could be a handy-woman!.........

If you weren't so sexist you'd see that women do plenty of hand jobs.
