The Things Kids Say

Three years ago when my youngest son was 5, he was at his church primary teacher's house for an activity. She was having a BBQ for her primary class and he was in the kitchen helping her bring the condiments outside. His teacher, who is a little overweight, had taped a picture from a magazine to her fridge of a brother and sister who collectively weighed close to 2,000 lbs. My son was staring at this picture so she told him that she put it up there to help her keep from eating too much. He looked her up and down and said, very matter-of-factly, "It doesn't really work, though, huh."

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

Re: The Things Kids Say

When my eldest daughter was just learning the grasp of English language, she took a liking to a pony... So, I taught her the word "pony".

She coudlnt' quite grasp it so I broke it down for her. I said "Po" and she repeated, "Po". Next, I pointed to my knee and see "Ny" (Knee).

We repeated, each time getting slightly faster;

Po...ny, po...ny, po...ny

Po..ny, po..ny, po..ny

Po.ny, po.ny, po.ny

Eventually she was practically saying it as one word... "Po-ny"

Now I told her to say it as one whole word, by herself.

"KNEE-PO!!!" she proudly shouted! Ahhh shit that memory still, to this day, cracks me up!

Out of the gloom a voice spake unto me. 'Smile and be happy, Things could get worse."
So I smiled and was happy, and behold... Things did get worse.
