    Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

noticed a sign on the door of our local Marks and Spencer - they are supporting the prostate awareness campaign (March is prostate cancer awareness month). According to the sign they were selling pens and "trolley vouchers" (whatever they are) for £2 to raise money for the charity. Inside the store I didn't see anything, nothing at the food checkouts that i used. so pretty half hearted effort by all accounts. Other than that I haven't seen any publicity (in stark contrast to another form of "female-only" cancer). Nice to see that the main cancer charity (with shops in every high street of the country) Cancer Research UK are doing nothing of note.

    Re: Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

I remember going into my local Marks and Spencer last year inquiring about their prostate cancer signs (I think I made a thread about it). An older female assistant was helpful and pointed me towards some leaflets and pin badges, and listened to me griping about the inadequacy of prostate and testicular funding overall.

I'll toddle down to the store next week and see what's improved or not.

There's no real reason the media can't get behind this a bit more and get the public involved - as they do with female cancer projects.

There has been a fair amount of media about the Prostate lately, mostly questioning the utility of testing and whether it is better to get a PSA (blood) test or a visit to Doc Gerbil Jammer - or both.

Much of the material now questions the cost / benefit of dealing with this 'slow growing' cancer - versus letting men die of other causes before needing to treat.

    'Material' derived from where?

I've read it costs upwards of a million dollars to keep a woman alive diagnosed with breast cancer including all the expensive tests and medicines.

Yet here in the UK a number of years ago a prostate screening procedure was scrapped on the basis of being too expensive. The cost per test? Ten pounds. Yes, a man's life is not worth ten fuckin' pounds.

Conversely men are worth far more to women either dead or divorced then healthy.

It is funny that men are worth no more than 10 pounds to society to keep alive when men overall are far more creative, innovative, and productive than the "fairer" sex.

I've lost so much sympathy for women.
When I do this, and I know I will, it will be comparable to the lame learning to walk, the blind being enabled to see and the suffocated breathing again. The sky isn't the limit; there are no limits.

Cancer society casts more doubt on prostate tests

03/04/2010 - ATLANTA—Months after experts discounted the importance of routine mammograms and Pap smears for many women, the American Cancer Society is warning more explicitly than ever that regular testing for prostate cancer is of questionable value too, and can do men more harm than good.

    Teen shoots his own testicles

    Times-Herald staff report 03/05/2010

A Vallejo teenager allegedly shot himself in the testicles Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police said the 17-year-old, whose name is being withheld because he's a minor, walked into Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center at about 5:45 p.m. with a gunshot wound.
The gun is still outstanding, police said, and the teen has not been cooperative.

When you say "scrapped" you mean it's not even available if you pay for it out of your own pocket. It sucks either way - I'm not a fan of socialized medicine, but if you have to have it, it should be distributed in a non-discriminatory manner. What you've described, CD, is an intolerable blatant case of discrimination. But if you can't get it even by paying for it yourself, that's even worse! Is that where Obama care will lead?

    Re: Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

i had a prostate cancer scare a few months ago, i couldnt hold any urine at all for more than half an hour or risk extreme nausea, pain...or simply pissing myself for relief. i figured it was a urinary tract infection, which was happening quite a bit around here then. so i went to the doctor, he told me it wasnt my bladder and to bend over and dont clench too hard. that was fun. *cough*

he said it was swollen, they took a urine and blood samples. turned out to just be prostatitis. thank you jesus. i just had to get fingerfukt by some doctor with blue teeth for a month for it to go away. (seriously i think he brushes his teeth with ajax)

but i was terrified for a few weeks while the testing was being done that i was gonna snuff it, to quote you brits. it was only that scary because i put up with the pain for a few weeks before it got to being too bad. i thought i sealed my own fate.

i want to increase awareness in my community, can anyone direct me to a site or article that can inform me on an effective method?

P.S. Isn't it funny that an organ within my own body designed specifically for interfacing with women, is attacking me without provocation?

    Re: Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Is it officially confirmed that March is the prostate cancer awareness month? I notice lots of breast cancer charity during October, but haven't seen such support for prostate cancer to date.

It would be better to combine breast and prostate cancer awareness during the same month.

For example this site nbcam.org is only for breast cancer awareness, so why not include prostate/testicular cancer?

All men should know that November is prostate cancer awareness month, highlighted by the excellent "Movember" movement. You can find details here: Movember United Kingdom - About

Although it is not surprising that you have not heard of it. Men's health continues to have a disgracefully low profile in so many areas.

I'd really like to support it... it disgusts me how much funding breast cancer gets compared to prostate cancer.
