Men with prostate cancer face 'titanic battle' for treatment

Men are having to fight 'titanic battles' for access to tried and tested treatments for prostate cancer, a charity chief said today.
John Neate, chief executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity criticised a "short-sighted and devalued" NHS, which was compromising the care of prostate cancer patients.
His comments came as a report revealed five of the 34 NHS cancer networks in England have still not approved plans to implement Nice standards for cancer care four years after they were set.
And fewer than a quarter of networks had made their plans publicly accessible, making it hard to monitor progress.
Other guidelines calling for a central role for specialist nurses were also not being adopted in some areas.
Prostate cancer is now the most common men's cancer in the UK. Each year, nearly 32,000 men are diagnosed with the disease and 10,000 men die from it. Yet the survey by campaign group Prostate Cancer Charter for Action also found inconsistent treatment across the country.
It found prostate cancer specialist nurses were five times more likely to be found in some networks than in others, and there was a more than 10-fold variation in numbers of urological nurses.
Cancer networks were not even all agreed on what constitutes a specialist nurse.

'Let down by NHS'

Mike Birtwistle, spokesman for Prostate Cancer Charter for Action, said: "These findings make worrying reading for all men. We know that men with prostate cancer report a significantly worse experience of their treatment and care than patients with other cancers.
"The NHS assured us the Improving Outcomes Guidance would change this, but we now find that it is not being consistently implemented. This will mean that too many men with prostate cancer will continue to be let down by the NHS."
The report was published to coincide with the National Prostate Cancer Conference taking place today in London.
Speaking at the meeting, John Neate, chief executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said men were having to fight "titanic battles" for access to tried and tested treatments.
A "short-sighted and devalued" NHS was compromising the care of prostate cancer patients, he claimed.
Mr Neate said: "It cannot be acceptable that men and their families who are already having to deal with the tough news of a prostate cancer diagnosis have to wrestle with NHS bureaucracy at the same time."
The survey was conducted via a questionnaire sent to all 34 cancer networks, 24 of which replied.
An interesting comment left on the website:

Another unequivocal example of the anti-male mentality in this country. If female breast cancer victims were treated this way then there would be uproar.

Apologies for the above, seems I am unable to edit once posted !

Did a report on that subject on my blog a couple of weeks ago.

Apparently women receive over 600 million dollars from the federal government as breast cancer kills 2600 women per year and Prostate cancer kills 2700 males and get NOTHING.....

That's pretty awful, isn't it

But, whatever it is - it isn't sexism, cos feminists tell us it isn't, so it must be true.

Re: Men with prostate cancer face 'titanic battle' for treatment

I've been thinking about this recently. Every time I turn on the radio, I hear about the Kommen Race for the Cure, or the Kommen Sleepover for the Cure, or the Kommen Don't Do Anything Just Give Us Money for The Cure, etc.

I thought it was terribly one-sided, but then I thought, "What would it take to arrange an event to raise money for prostate cancer research?" I mean, those Kommen people had to work to make their events happen, right?

Six months from now, when they're raising money for prostate cancer research, if we (or someone who knows what they're doing, heh) arranged with a city to hold a fundraiser, called the radio stations, had some little blue ribbon pins made, blogged about it, podcasted about it, emailed about it, put up posters, etc...see where I'm going with this?
