A male contraceptive pill that doesn't use hormones
The creation of an effective and reversible male contraceptive method (that isn't the condom) is currently a hot research topic, as various institutes attempt to come up with a way of stopping sperm without doing any permanent harm. None of these attempts has yet resulted in a male pill, but now scientists have discovered a formula that just might work.
Described in the newest issue of Cell, this technique relies on a newly discovered compound that can effectively cross the boundary from blood vessels into the testis. The chemical is a thienodiazepine inhibitor called JQ1, which targets the protein BRDT, which is tied to sperm development. On JQ1, mice produce fewer sperm, and the ones they produce are much worse swimmers. Even better, the compound doesn't change testosterone levels, or lead to any apparent decrease in sex drive.
Will the product make it to your local pharmacy?
I hear it but I don't see it!

Re: A male contraceptive pill that doesn’t use hormones
Indeed.
The simple fact is, male contraceptives, already exist and have been trialled. Many more may be discovered over time like this, but none of that helps men waiting for contraception.
It is nice to see a pill though that doesn't rely on synthetic testosterone and all of the debatable side effects.
The only thing holding up male contraception is the refusal of governments/health departments to release it in to the mainstream. They try to argue men wouldn't be interested. They try to argue on cost, which is rubbish as one injection that lasts over 10 years, costs less than the syringe used to administer it.
Funnily enough, this news comes as I hit a brick wall emailing the NHS, so I decided to take the next democratic step, which I hope you will support:
Petition on change.org > Allow male contraceptives - End sexism and give men equal rights.

The governments and health departments don't want to release it into the main stream because it will immediately kill any stranglehold that women have over reproduction.
If the stranglehold is killed, the population will plunge and the amount of suckers paying child support will shrink drastically.Greed is for amateurs.

My response:
Talking about "whether women would trust their partners to take the drug" is more projection than anything based in reality. It's women who've proven they can't be trusted with contraception. Men will be popping the pill like smarties to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Instead of just getting pregnant when it suits them, women will actually have to consult and secure the man's consent. Shock horror! Many women (and political strategists, feminists, lawyers, legal parasites etc) are terrified of men gaining control of their bodies and losing the ability to become pregnant whenever and by whom they choose. We're talking about a curtailing of what is a very lucrative business to certain devious women, who view babies as annuities and chess pieces. In every sphere of life now we have a self-centered group of women constantly trying to shape the discussion about male topics to their own benefit, and the male pill isn't any different. Men gaining some reproductive rights is long overdue!
