Re: HPV vaccine for boys recommended in Canada
"Both genders contribute to the spread of HPV and develop diseases as a result of HPV infection," Dr. Franziska Baltzer, a spokesman for the Canadian Association of Adolescent Health and head of adolescent medicine at Montreal Children's Hospital.
"To eliminate those diseases, we need to vaccinate males as well as females," he added in a statement.

Re: HPV vaccine for boys recommended in Canada
I recently saw a documentary about this in England, hosted by a young woman who's boyfriend had died from HPV and was not afforded equality from his government. While girls get the HPV vaccine free of charge (is there anything women don't get free these days?) her boyfriend had to pay in EXCESS of either £300 or £3,000 - I can't remember now (it was several months ago and I wasn't watching it per-se, it was just noise in the background while I was at work). I'm not sure of the ins & outs of the story, but he ended up dead and she went on a hunt with TV cameras to enquire with the government why boys were being ignored and left to die. The government said to the effect that it was monetary based decision to screw boys over.

Re: HPV vaccine for boys recommended in Canada
"Dr. Perry Kendall, British Columbia's chief medical officer of health, said his province has not yet had a chance to review the NACI statement or do the economic evaluation needed to determine whether it should offer the vaccine for free to males."
And there you have it folks, It all comes down to $$ and which gender gets the benefits. It ain't gonna be folks with an XY chromosome.

I refuse to take any damn vaccine. Who knows what is in that vaccine.
This recommendation probably has a sinister motive.Last edited by haute macabre; 26th-January-2012 at 06:56 PM.

Similar idea for boys to be immunised for Rubella, the disease can be present in both sexes. It makes sense to address both rather than only treat one half of the vulnerable population.

P.E.I. considers free HPV vaccine for boys
Health Canada approved Gardasil to prevent infection caused by human papilloma virus Types six, 11, 16, and 18 and genital warts caused by HPV types six and 11
Only about a third of adolescent girls have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
Morrison said before moving forward, she wants to see if the Canadian Immunization Committee will agree with the recommendation.
She also said the province should come up with the funds to pay for the extra vaccines.

Re: HPV vaccine for boys recommended in Canada
I'm incredibly old - like you wouldn't believe.
When I was a kid there was a very sensible and practical custom among the labouring classes.
If one kid in the street was diagnosed (this is back in the day when the doctor actually came to your house!) with one of those regular diseases that are fairly petty in childhood but serious in adulthood, the parents of the infected child were obliged to throw a children's party for everybody in the street. Better be infected now than later.
"Chicken Pox" was everywhere so better get it over with.
More particularly our parents wanted the girls to get rubella and the boys to get mumps, but all were invited. For 90% of kids 3 or 4 days in bed was not a high price to pay for lifelong immunity and at least you got cake, ice-cream and lemonade.

Re: HPV vaccine for boys recommended in Canada
The cynic in me leads me to believe that the only reason such a proposal has ever seen the light of day, is that vaccinating boys may provide additional protection for the sex that really matters. Any improvement to the health of males is just a fortunate by-product. My cynicism is based on something very similar in the UK a few years back, where I read a report recommending the vaccination of boys against some kind of STD (I forget which) but where the entire drive of the report was how much girls were suffering and that treating boys was the most cost-effective way of ensuring fewer girls would get infected.
