WTF is this??
This article was on Stuff today.

Quote:
Blokes are set to get health checks in freezing works, timber mills and hardware stores under a Government plan to make doctor visits more men-friendly.

Almost $3 million in funding to promote greater awareness of men's health was announced yesterday by Associate Health Minister Damien O'Connor.

"It's no secret that Kiwi blokes can be reluctant patients," he said.
The funding, announced to mark Men's Health Week, will include:

- $600,000 for targeted health checks at times and places to suit men. Suggestions include car shows, sports clubs and hardware stores.

- $250,000 for men's health initiatives at work. This will focus on male-dominated workplaces like factories, timber mills and construction yards.

- $500,000 for a "social marketing campaign", including television advertising, to promote men's health. The Government is "on the lookout" for a celebrity to front this.

- $300,000 for a men's "health innovation fund" to be set up to support community-based initiatives.

- $300,000 for improving access to men's health information, such as telephone services.

The Health Ministry's 2006-07 national health survey - made public last week - showed men were getting better at seeing a doctor, with nine out of 10 having a primary health provider such as a GP.

But they still lagged slightly behind women.

Mr O'Connor said the increased access to doctors was a good start but men were more likely to have risky health habits such as smoking and heavy drinking.

The Government's recent announcement that it would fast-track a colorectal (bowel) cancer screening programme would also benefit men, because they had a substantially higher mortality rate.

Mr O'Connor said a national screening programme for prostate cancer would not be appropriate "until we have a more accurate system of screening and testing".

Hmm, it MUST be election year.

Mr O'Connor needs to wake up from his feminist-induced coma and get with it.
Frankly, men's health services in this country (and indeed most civilised countries) are pretty much non-existant, compared to the tens of millions poured into womens health, EVERY YEAR, not just when an election is coming up.
Try again, dude, we hate being paid lip service.

"I am most anxious to enlist everyone who can speak or write to join in checking this mad, wicked folly of 'Women's Rights', with all its attendant horrors, on which her poor feeble sex is bent, forgetting every sense of womanly feelings and propriety. Feminists ought to get a good whipping. Were woman to 'unsex' themselves by claiming equality with men, they would become the most hateful, heathen and disgusting of beings, and would surely perish without male protection."

-- Queen Victoria, 1870.

Re: Health checks where Kiwi blokes gather

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I was under the impression that us men went to an earlier grave, not because of smoking or heavy drinking, like Mr O'Connor says we do, I thought it was because we tend to, umm,
work harder and for longer in dangerous occupations.

Us men do like a drink, yes, but to blindly put our early demise down to the Health department mantra of "smoking and drinking kills", is just laziness, in the extreme.

How many of these health department clowns (more than likely clownesses) actually bothered to ask men what they thought about access to health services?
Most men I know work a 6 day week, consisting of 12+ hour days plus travel time.
And no, we don't say we have to leave at 2pm to pick the kids up from playcentre.

Please let me put this another way.

Just pretend I am the union and I enter a big construction site asking men if they want health care?

Me: Hey guys, do you want to see the doctor once a month?

Men: How much is that going to cost me?

Me: It will cost you an extra 10% of your wages.

Men: Not interested.

................

Another scenario.

Me: Hey men, I am going to up your taxes to care for women and children because they are unsafe.

Men: grumble, grumble, under their breathe.

Me: So I guess that is unanimous. Thanx.

..............

BTW, did you read my piece on menz. Check out the links. Please.
