Safer, Healthier, Cheaper & More Liberating - The Artificial Uterus.

Artificial Wombs, self-contained synthetic structures that replicate the best of a real woman's uterus, will surely soon be available in the mass market, as technology progresses in its relentlessly life-improving way.

The demand for such a thing is clearly, tentatively, huge. Offering a safer, healthier, more affordable and liberating way of having a child, only those most conservative, traditional, or desperately poor will choose the conventional organic method.

Scientists are already working on artificial womb projects and finding some niggling difficulties in doing so.

As for clarifying my listed benefits of such a technology, an artificial womb would present a safer option, as it would be of a mechanical design in common with life-support systems that are most probably less susceptible to failure than human bodies, including healthy mothers. Further more, these devices would be static, as opposed to climbing stairs, walking streets and driving cars.

An artificial womb would be a healthier womb. This holds for the same reasons technology is employed in the production of the vegetables and fruits we eat. Hydroponics set-ups administer carefully, optimally controlled doses of nutrient to plants roots, while allowing for maximum air flow, and minimal disturbance from soil-based pests. I do not mean to suggest an infant child and a tomato plant are one and the same, but there are in fact parallels to be drawn.

As for more affordable, please do the following maths; Pregnant women experience a significantly reduced capacity to work. Women expecting children the artificial way will have the flexibility to work for longer, if they wish. And so they will be more liberated, able to walk, fly and live more comfortably, also free of any possible concern that they might not recognise their own bodies, during and after pregnancy.

While I appreciate technology and it's great advances, I am not going to trust it to dealing with humans.

If I can't do it by my own uterus, I'd adopt or not do it at all. lol

I have a few pints of spunk which I am sure will freeze well and can be thawed in in 2122 for the mass insemination of the sheeple..

Natural pregnancy will be optional in the future. Artificial wombs will be the preferred standard method of reproduction, to create healthier, safer, superior offspring by fixing potential genetic or birth defects, enhance humans.

This isn't just for statists, it's for people who don't want to endure the risks and downsides of natural pregnancy.

It also helps humans explore and colonize the galaxy if they have to travel light-years. Because it's much smarter if humans can be grown when the space-ship arrives at the planet of destination.

Just to elaborate a 'lil: will require a radical shift in societal role assumptions and how we behave. lol But will women still somehow be harmlessly inseminated just to maintain that "emotionally balancing high" ?

Very true indeed. It is definitely a very statist matter though as such technologies are wide open for abuse even if private individuals could indeed manage to ever get the resources to develop such.. Tampering with DNA is fraught with ethical considerations and while I suspect that this is the future, it is a long way off yet.. I am looking forward to fusion power stations long before they can get the majority of folk to wank in a pot and grow a designer baby with 11 heads and 28 legs!

This is actually soon in the future. The advantages are too many which counter negatives. Ectogenesis technology will be expensive at first, and too complex for a regular person, so it'll require doctors and experts to manage it at hospitals etc.

Yes there are risks with many technologies, but again this is also the way the merger of human and machine (singulary) would begin at the stage when an embryo grows.

Singularity is a gradual proces though. However, medical facilities for ectogenesis (growth of an embryo to full-term outside the human body) is in the near future. It will be optional like I said for those who prefer that method.

An experiment, done in the 1600's or something, tested to see what would happen if a mother did not talk to her child in its' infancy. Two sets of newborns were used, one set the mothers talked to the babies and the other set got nothing. The babies who did not have verbal communication all died rather quickly. I don't think the actual test runs will go very well. Besides, it's like manufacturing humans; clone wars anyone? There is a reason women have uterus's and don't lay eggs. The pregnancy allows the mother to bond with her baby and helps the baby to mentally develop.

Of course, in some instances it would be helpful. Like if the mother has complications; though she should take a very active role in it's care while in the fake womb.

Considering the amount of alcohol and other poisons many mothers consume while pregnant I guess the child could perhaps be better off out of the most dangerous environment for a human in its whole life!

I guess abortions would be much easier this way.. Just turn the life support off!
