I wonder how many men joke about this sort of thing, to the extent of putting pictures and bidding software online and advertising it? And more importantly, how many men would get away without a charge under the claim it was a ... joke?

Well, its bad and good story - personally I am in favour of a return to true Roman Law, where a man had the power of life and death over his wife and kids. And lets face it, the Roman Empire was the greatest civilisation ever, so I guess we could learn a thing or two from them (-:

Now you mention it, roman law is a compulsory subject to all future lawyers/solicitors. Many roman laws still are an essential part of english law, e.g. "certiorari" quote; (Certiorari is a Latin word meaning "to be informed of, or to be made certain in regard to". It is also the name given to certain appellate proceedings for re-examination of actions of a trial court, or inferior appeals court. The U.S. Supreme Court still uses the term certiorari in the context of appeals.)
However, its spirit has been lost in a thicket of "ifs" and "perhaps" of rules made by dense judges.
