Marriage laws in India
I am from India, and this is my second thread here. I am increasingly disturbed by the skewed marriage laws in our country. I would like to draw your attention to a law that has recently been proposed.
It introduces a new ground for divorce: irrevocable differences (this was previously not a ground for divorce in India). Both the husband and wife can claim divorce on this ground. The wife can challenge her husband's claim, even on the grounds that the divorce will cause her financial hardship. However, if a wife claims divorce on these grounds, the husband cannot challenge it at all.
As usual, this law is backed by feminists, who are, as we all know - committed to equality between the sexes.
Comments? There are several other marriage and sex-related laws in India that deserve mention. I hope to post about them here soon.

Re: Marriage laws in India
And there was our Richard saying, only days ago, that India wasn't fem-infested.... dang!

Wife : "I dreamt they were auctioning off dicks. The big ones went for ten dollars and the thick ones went for twenty dollars."
Husband : "How about the ones like mine?"
Wife : "Those they gave away."
Husband : "I had a dream too...I dreamt they were auctioning off pussy. The pretty ones went for a thousand dollars, and the little tight ones went for two thousand."
Wife : "And how much for the ones like mine?"
Husband : "That's where they held the auction."

I like the old Hindi Cinema. But that new stuff is far to Hollywooded(?) for my taste. All about the sex, "love", and sex. As the saying goes, "they just don't make them like they used to."

Re: Marriage laws in India
Since you mention the dowry case, I'll take the opportunity to mention another law. This one isn't a proposed law, it's an existing law.
Under Article 498, if a woman complains of domestic violence, her husband and in many cases his parents and siblings MUST be immediately arrested by the police. No warrant or evidence of any sort is required to arrest him. Nothing is required apart from the woman's word that she was subjected to violence.
After several days in lockup he will face trial, where evidence will be examined. He may be found guilty or innocent.
Amazingly 98% of the men arrested under this Article have been found to be innocent by the court! Indian women are using the law for revenge. Husband unhappy about the huge shopping bill? Slap a 498 on him. Husband doesn't want mommy-in-law moving in? 498 to the rescue! A couple of days in lockup should teach him a lesson!
An uncle of mine has a wife who argued with him, tried to slit her own wrists - failed, but still injured herself - went to the police and lodged a 498 saying HE did it. She wanted him charged with attempted murder too. Only by bribing several policemen did my uncle manage to wiggle free.

Re: Marriage laws in India
Let me mention yet another law. The law on adultery. Firstly, note that adultery is not just considered immoral in India, it is actually illegal. (Heck, it was even proposed that pre-marital sex should be made illegal, but thankfully that didn't work out.) Incredibly, adultery is a crime only for men!
Yes, you read that right. This means that when there is a conviction on grounds of adultery, the man involved will face several years in jail, and the woman involved will be 'completely absolved of any punishment'.
What could be the rationale behind this law? It is assumed that in sexual relations (and especially illicit ones, as adultery surely is), it must have been the man, possessing the vile and bestial nature intrinsic to men, who initiated the matter. After all, surely no Indian woman, angels as they are, would ever imagine 'betraying' her husband on her own accord? Thus, even if not raped outright, she must have been swindled in some way into giving her consent, by the man. The man must therefore be punished, and the woman treated with sympathy and protected against further injustices that society might inflict upon her.
