Spaniards divorced at the rate of one couple every 3.7 minutes last year, pushing the traditionally Catholic country to the top of the European Union marriage failure rankings, a study said.
Three in every four Spanish marriages now end in divorce, the investigation by the Family Policy Institute (IPF), based on Spanish legal records found.
The data is another blow to the one-time image of a Catholic Spain of stable, big families. The country also has one of the world's lowest birthrates.
The IPF said Spain had the most divorces per inhabitant in Europe. Non-Catholic, northern European nations have traditionally held that place but recent studies show the number of marriages falling in those countries.
Almost 142,000 couples split in Spain last year, up more than 50 per cent from 2005 and quadruple the number who divorced in 2001, the IPF investigation showed.
Two years ago, Spain's Socialist government passed a law dubbed the "express divorce" rule that allows couples to split more quickly, without blame and made it easier to share custody of any children involved.
The law was approved by all parties except the right-wing Partido Popular, which has close links to the Catholic Church.
Last year, Pope Benedict used a quick visit to the coastal city of Valencia to praise traditional family values and insist that marriage should be heterosexual and for life, implicitly condemning Spain's gay marriage and quick divorce laws.
