Women are still a rarity in the boardroom, holding only one in ten of the top positions in FTSE 100 companies, a study has revealed.
Only a third of the 33,000 most senior positions in all British companies are held by women, despite the fact that females make up nearly half the workforce.
The Equal Opportunities Commission has concluded they are the victims of "a thin veneer of equality" which is often destroyed as soon as they have children. Many become full-time mothers while those who want to keep on working can be penalised if they ask for flexibility in their jobs.
Jenny Watson, chairman of the commission, described the findings of the report - Sex and Power: Who Runs Britain? - as "troubling". She said: "It shows just how slow the pace of change has been in powerful British institutions."
For some jobs, such as museum bosses and local council leaders, the number of women reaching the top of the career ladder has actually fallen since 2003.
The commission's report claims that if senior positions were split equally between the sexes, another 6,000 women would occupy them.
According to its definition, those with "top jobs" include MPs, FTSE 100 directors, secondary school heads and the chief executives of charities.

This argument is ridiculous. Most men do not hold top positions in FTSE 100 companies but have low paid and often dangerous jobs. It is strange that nobody shows any concern about the fact that women are also underrepresented in such jobs such as sewer maintenance.

But surely, unlike in government, promotion is carried out on the basis of moving the most suitable people into the positions, based on performance and potential, not because of sex, race or any other parameter. It is called the "pursuit of excellence". So keep the PC brigade out of this discussion, please, and let natural selection take it course.

These figures are always misleading. Just because women make up half the population doesn't mean that half of them should make up the top jobs or, as reported elsewhere, half of them should be MPs.
If only 5% of women are deciding to become MPs, then you would only expect about 5% of woman to be MPs, not 50%.
The figures should be broken down into various categories to determine in which areas women make up to working population and whether they are properly represented.

On the Equal opportunities Commission website the list of executives and commissioners shows 15 people - 11 women and 4 men. So 26.7% are men and all appear down the bottom of the pecking order.
Perhaps the EOC should get its own house in order before criticising others?
