You ask: How do you get away with making stuff up.
Answer is simple: Woman.

I'm not hating on women, what I'm saying is that society allows women to lie. Female lies are how they manipulate men. They do it in two ways with lies.
#1 requiring the man to be responsible for the lie. What I mean is...the woman is not responsible to prove her lie. It is up to the man and anyone else challenging the woman to prove she is lying (i.e. doing endless research, investigations etc) which is a time consuming red herring, which brings me to my second point.

#2 Time: The research must be flawless...which requires time, perhaps ages, unlike feminist research which is perfectly fine to be inconsistent and just flat out a lie. By the time a man has thoroughly (its never enough though) finished his investigation, the woman (or male feminist) has already moved on to dozens of other lies. Lies are created faster than the research to disprove them. Those that disagree are the only ones required to do the "research". Once an anti-feminist has disproved a lie, it is old news already. They've moved on to other "atrocities" against the female gender. You can't ever keep up.

So the only solution people are faced with are..."either give up and do as I say, and think as I say, and agree with me" or "spend eternity trying to debate me on a few of my billions of levels of lies and never win...you might win some battles but you will never win the war"

Those two choices are checkmate...no matter which square you go on...they'll have your king. So you are just left sitting there with your finger on your chess piece afraid to move.

Does that college happen by chance to be in Canada? I don't have any stories of my own like that from college, but yes, from daily life. It gets harder and harder to tolerate B.S. like that, day by day. Contrary to your belief, phlegmists, JUST AS MANY women abuse their families and other individuals in ways like this and beyond every single day. That's right, I said JUST...AS...MANY. Any arguments will be ignored. If he's staying in that class, I'd have to say good luck toughing it out, sir! Hopefully there are some other men in the class with whom he can support, be supported by and commiserate. We've all been through it. We've all been forced to sit through lectures and videos making men look like total jack@$$es. I had an orientation at work recently where they showed us a sexual harassment video. And we all know how one-sided that is!
"Freshman" is beyond ridiculous. Tell your husband if someone says that to him again, he should hand whoever it was a dictionary, open to F-R, and say, "There is no such word as 'freshwoman.' Each college entrant, male or female, is a FRESHMAN. Go to hell."
