Reading your lamentations today (8/10) reminded me of crocodiles shedding tears for komodos who lost their lunches, and similar similes on the theme of Hypocrisy.

Thus perhaps a moment of clarity is needed for the Lurking Masses to catch their collective psychic breath, and take time to recall the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh - and the Dream that once was Antelope, and became Rajneeshpuram, and eventually returned unto the prior condition of Antelope; after the passing of the Bugwun become Osho and the incarceration of the Sheila Monster.

In a nutshell - the Bagwan (Bug-wun to the unwashed masses) was a phenomenon unto himself, leader of a group of 'Free Love' disciples who took over a remote town in Oregon named Antelope in the 1980s and renamed it after their leader - a sexual hedonist who took a vow of silence and spent his free time touring and waving to his (preferably wealthy) fans from one of the fleet of rolls royce cars his admirers bought for him. After his henchwomyn "Sheila" tried to poison the local politicians and rig an election, he was run out of town and changed his name to Osho and later croaked.

A recent mention of him with disdain for his "Musings" has brought back pungent memories of my own pilgrimage to Antelope (years after his passing) and one of my own favorite mementos of my own travels- a copy of the local paper (The Rajneesh Times of 3/18/1985) that I bought for $5 in the only store in modern Antelope - which looks almost exactly as run down and isolated as the Old Antelope, before its brief time in the limelight as Rajneeshpuram. In as much as questions around him brought up the subject of Religion versus Cults - I thought the following passages from the Bugwun Himself on the nature of Weimar Kalifornia and Cults to be of great relevance:

AFA ends boycott: McDonald's agrees to changes (American Family Alliance) October 9, 2008 - Great news! Because of AFA supporters like you, McDonald’s has told AFA they will remain neutral in the culture war regarding homosexual marriage.

AFA is ending the boycott of McDonald’s. As you know, AFA called for the boycott in May after McDonald’s joined the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). McDonald’s said McDonald’s Vice President Richard Ellis has resigned his position on the board of NGLCC and that his seat on the board will not be replaced. McDonald’s also said that the company has no plans to renew their membership in NGLCC when it expires in December.

In an e-mail to McDonald’s franchised owners the company said, “It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald’s remains neutral on same sex marriage or any ‘homosexual agenda’ as defined by the American Family Association.”

We appreciate the decision by McDonald’s to no longer support political activity by homosexual activist organizations. You might want to thank your local McDonald’s manager.

NeW Chapter of the Month: University of Idaho (Network of Enlightened Women)

Kathryn and Nicole founded a NeW Chapter at the University of Idaho this fall. Here is an excerpt from the interview with Kathryn for this NeWsletter. Congrats on your success!

Why did you decide to start NeW?
"As a student at the University of Idaho, I felt as though my political convictions didn't have a voice. Nicole, my friend and coworker, returned from an internship in Washington D.C. and said she found the perfect group for us to start. She had attended NeW's national conference and shared her excitement with me. Our campus is nestled in a small town in North Idaho. People are extremely liberal and vocal in their opinions. Being able to create a group on campus where women could meet and identify with one another sounded like an awesome opportunity.

Stereotypes plague conservative women on our campus. We knew that there were other women on campus looking for a group like NeW to identify with. I am a conservative woman, and I don't stay home and knit every night. Sarah Palin graduated from the University of Idaho. She is such an excellent example of conservatism. We are strong women; we are leaders, well spoken and feminine. I knew that by starting NeW at the U of I, we would be able break down the stereotypes and barriers of conservative women, and make ourselves known and respected on campus and in the community. "

What book is your chapter reading?
"What Our Mothers Didn't Tell Us: Why Happiness Eludes the Modern Woman by Danielle Crittenden"

What is your favorite part about NeW?
"So far my favorite part of NeW has been the reaction on campus. People are curious as to what we are all about. Our school newspaper did an article on us and our facebook group grew almost immediately! I feel like we are meeting our goals in moving in the right direction to make a difference. I also love our meetings. With the election this Fall we have had some great discussions. I love being able to meet with other young conservative women!!"

What is your goal in starting NeW?
"I hope that in starting NeW at the University of Idaho, women will feel pride in standing up for their conservative values on campus. I hope that we will be able to provide meetings where our members leave feeling educated by our discussions. Most of all, my goal in starting NeW is to contribute to the intellectual diversity on campus. The feminist voice is not the only voice for women on the University of Idaho campus any longer."

Although he fell so far from his station as to be bereft of all his Rolls Royce Fleet, the Bugwon did eventually reinvent himself as 'Osho' and ran some similar cons for a while; and at least one report had him shifting his loyalty to Mercedes Benz as well. Regardless of whether he finally shuffled off this astral plane towards greater enlightenment, or another turn at the wheel - his story inspired your corespondent in ways manifold and mysterious.
