Fitocracy gives point bonuses to women
I joined this fitness website at the start of the year over at Fitocracy - Level Up Your Fitness and it's helped me a lot in improving my fitness. Basically it's an MMORPG but one earns points, achievements, level ups and quests by exercising in the real world. It's quite addictive and great at encouraging one to try different things.
But on the blog they were discussing that they decided to give women a small boost for doing weight lifting exercises. I worked out that by small they mean roughty +25% more points.
I felt this was unfair because it was giving women more points for the same amount of workout. As a lightly built man there's a lot of women out there who could overpower me with ease. My feeling was that it shouldn't take sex into account, only the person's weight and their weight they're lifting. I feel it is pointless comparing my progress with my female friends because they get so many bonus points I just can't respect their achievements as equal to my own.
However, my housemate (male) disagreed saying that since men were stronger on average than women it was only fair to give women extra points. Now he is a chauvanist and told me that I only had an issue with this because I'm delusional about women having superior status to men and that I'm letting emotion guide my thinking.
Well, I haven't thought about it in depth, he is right about that. Maybe he has a point about taking into account the average superiority that men have over women (but because of my position on the bell curve doesn't apply to me), and maybe I'm just getting upset about nothing.
Alternatively, maybe you guys can provide some extra insights into this because I feel it isn't fair to give this buff to women on the assumption that all women are weaker than men and all men are the when it comes to being stronger than women.
Another thought I had was, well if men are superior to women, then let them be superior to women, don't artificially bump the scores to make it look like we're equal when we're not.
What are your thoughts about this?

Re: Fitocracy gives point bonuses to women
Your housemate is basically saying that there should be an equality of outcome despite the fact that men in general are better weightlifters. Quite frankly, I think you have a case here and it's he who hasn't thought this matter all the way through.
Such bonuses should be abolished. Since it's an MMORPG though, another solution would be to give some other bonus to male players such as 25% boost when doing stretching exercises. Different bonuses for different character classes add more strategic depth, no?

Re: Fitocracy gives point bonuses to women
Message the site admins and demand that women do an extra 12.5% of the relevant exercises, and men do 12.5% less.
And ask them what ajustments are made for the increasing strength that women gain. At what point are they considered equal in strength to a man?
And if a bonus is to be given to weakness, ask why men are not given a bonus at the start, as clearly they are only there because they are in need of the exercises. When in need of a drink to fill the soul

Re: Fitocracy gives point bonuses to women
So when bonuses are added, say in English classes, for boys - as we're said to be less verbally skilled than women - that too will be fine?
Somehow, once again, I doubt similar mind-sets will be applied when it comes to helping in any area where women naturally excel over men. Only giving women free stuff is fair, apparently.

Re: Fitocracy gives point bonuses to women
What gets me is that at the end of the day the points don't matter as much as the fitness gained. By giving women higher scores they'll be thinking incorrectly that they've somehow reached a level of fitness greater than a man, yet in reality they haven't. It stinks like the same idea of "we must keep women deluded and thinking they're equal to us men *wink wink*" which is condescending and infantilising.
Why can't we men be allowed to be men? Why can't we enjoy our strengths? Why must we feel ashamed because we're better at women at somethings? Are women so fragile they need us to treat them like inferiors? The developers are exclusively male to my knowledge.
Maybe we should do this in the olympics? Women only need to run 80m in the 100m sprint, they get 2.4 points each time they score in basketball and if they get a world record we'll take 25% off their times so they can be comparable to men's world records.

Re: Fitocracy gives point bonuses to women
I think the better solution, one that has long since been killed is the idea of separate places. Have a woman's game and men's game. Otherwise they need to play on equal footing. The deal is you both have not thought this through. You need to know that your roomy is right about the differences, and you are right about the unfairness. His thinking is why women cops have to get men on the street to help them arrest criminals, and why fire fighting is quickly becoming a simple suppression action, because it is too dangerous to go in the buildings. Its more dangerous than before because these women can't carry most people out of the building or their fellow fire fighters out who fall.
