I hope nobody minds me posting this. I made it in honor of Veteran's Day which is Nov. 11th in the U.S., but I dedicate it to soldiers everywhere. I can think of few groups more deserving of the title "Great Men" than our soldiers. In Honor of November 11th, Veteran's Day ![]() I realize I'm two days early, but I anticipate being busy this weekend and don't want to miss the opportunity to post in honor of Veteran's Day and our veterans. This is for soldiers everywhere, that have fought in defense of their homes, families, country. I thank you for your sacrifice. VETERANS DAY Written by: Fred Lazzati In the poppy fields where Veterans lie, Row on row-side by side. In the mist I hear voices: "We are the Veterans of this land, Fought for freedom, now we take our stand. We looked those strangers in the eye, All fought while others died. We never looked back in the face of danger, But we know we beat that fearsome stranger. "I hear the enemy general's line saying: "Charge! Charge! Don't let them in, Because war is hell and hell is sin." Then the erratic rifle fire ceases, And silence, silence, silence. We are the Veterans in ash we lie. On burning grounds of poppy fields. But we never stopped, Because we would never yield. We protected this land with our very best, But now it's time for us to rest. For we are many. ![]() IT IS THE SOLDIER by Charles M. Province It is the Soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." - Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird http://equalbutdifferent.blogspot.com/

I bought all my family poppies, and my two daughters lost theirs this week (as had I lol), so I went and got some more. We had quite a little do about it in our town, so I snapped this image of my kids (faces smeared for obvious reasons) in front of a vehicle from that era, including a driver!!! LoL Just as a side note, I nearly put the 50p for the girls' two poppies in the woman's cup of tea thinking she was holding a cup for coins. LoL

Outside the kosher supermarket here, the Jewish War Veterans always offers red poppy lapel doo-dads for a donation. My late grandfather and my late father were both veterans. My grandfather was a vet of World War One (he served from 1917 to 1919), and my father served in World War Two (1940-1945). My father served during the War by making propaganda posters for the US Army (he was an artist). One of his slogans was made famous during the war: "When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler" (to advocate carpooling due to gas rationing.) Years later, someone else claimed credit for the slogan, even though my Dad first came up with it. My grandfather (whom I never met; he died in 1955), served during World War One in the battles of St Mihiel, the Meuse-Argonne...I have his medals and the flag that covered his coffin when he died. Its a 48 star flag, and is basically all I have of the grandfather I never knew.

Great post Kim Here is another quote but I don't know who first said it. " I was that which others would not be" I have always found this simple statement to be very profound. Chevalier. "no greater love hath a man than to lay down his life for his brother."
