The death of feminism at British universities
By Harry Mount

Quietly, without much fanfare, women's studies has disappeared from British universities.
In the 70s, 80s and 90s, thousands of students across the country took the subject.
Over the last five years, numbers have dropped by 75 per cent and only 35 students are doing it this year. This summer, the last place offering the course, London Metropolitan University, is stopping women's studies altogether.

The main feminist struggles have been won, and the more ludicrous ones - bra-burning, the insistence that all men are oppressors - have been quietly dropped.
I know no man under 40 who insists that his wife give up her job and cook him dinner every night. Who's now surprised to have a female boss or a female doctor? And there's not much point in studying, say, women's politics rather than just politics, when a woman has been the most powerful Prime Minister ever.
With feminist victories absorbed into mainstream thought, hardly anyone calls themselves a feminist these days. It's as dated as drenching yourself in patchouli or tie-dyeing your jeans.
Students have begun to realise, too, that women's studies is useless for getting you a job. It's no coincidence that the subject's collapse coincided with the introduction of tuition fees. The moment you start paying for something is the moment you consider whether it's really worthwhile.
When commentators ridiculed the course at its height as "Wimmin's Studies" the feminist movement could rejoice in furious disapproval by their enemies. When the students themselves started referring to it as "Cosmo Studies" - as students at Warwick University used to call it - the subject was doomed."
I understand that here in Canada the billiards franchise "Velvet Underground" is still hiring womyn's studies graduates as full time ball breakers.

Wife : "I dreamt they were auctioning off dicks. The big ones went for ten dollars and the thick ones went for twenty dollars."
Husband : "How about the ones like mine?"
Wife : "Those they gave away."
Husband : "I had a dream too...I dreamt they were auctioning off pussy. The pretty ones went for a thousand dollars, and the little tight ones went for two thousand."
Wife : "And how much for the ones like mine?"
Husband : "That's where they held the auction."

That is good news. I wonder if US universities are trending in the same direction. The local Uni here still has Womyn Studies majors.
A degree in "women studies" is not only not much help in getting a job, but is viewed as a strong negative by many employers. Females majoring in hate-men don't do well to socialize at work and are a big risk for "harassment" costs.
May the die in peace. May they be soon forgotten. Time to begin the work of repealing female suffrage.

Got a link to the article?
Also, I hate the way they claim all young men don't want women in the kitchen. That's where women belong!! Sure, if women don't want to be in the kitchen, fine, let them do what they want, but that is their natural place.

Re: will the last womyn's studies student please turn out the lights
I found the article. The comments point out that "women's studies" is no where near as dead in the UK as the article claims.
And this oneHarry Mount information on the 'demise of' women's/ gender studies is ill informed. He presents opinion rather than fact. At least 9 London Universities offer women's/ gender degrees in London: LSE, UCL, SOAS, London Metropolitan, Goldsmiths, City University, East London University, Brikbeck University. Outside of London the list does on...Edinburgh, Essex, Sussex all offer gender/women's studies degrees. This does not mark the 'subject's collapse' as Mr Mount leads us to believe.
Academically the UK remains a strong centre for gender studies. Active women's rights groups are thriving. The Pro Choice (02/2008) and Reclaim the Right (11/2007) protests are packed with support.
Several other comments seem to think that feminism is alive and well throughout the whole university, not only in a particular department.Women’s Studies continues to be offered at the University of Westminster – the first institution to provide a certificated course in Women’s Studies in 1978 - as part of the combined studies programme in Social Sciences.

There are still many universities that offer women's studies. I think the positive aspect of the article is that,
While not dead, there's been a notable decrease in demand.Over the last five years, numbers have dropped by 75 per cent"Every noble impulse, every unselfish expression of love; every brave suffering for the right; every surrender of self to something higher than self; every loyalty to an ideal; every unselfish devotion to principle; every helpfulness to humanity; every act of self-control; every fine courage of the soul, undefeated by pretense or policy, but by being, doing, and living of good for the very good’s sake—that is spirituality." -David O. McKay

The degree is not useless. It is a primary qualification for zozhal verkers.
While I am happy to see the programs decline, it is the damage done that is the problem. It will take a generation to get rid of its effects.
