Univ. of Winnipeg Men's Studies Course?

U of W introducing course in men?s studies Monday, June 1, 2009 Winnipeg Free Press
WINNIPEG--The University of Winnipeg is introducing a course in men’s studies — an examination of masculinity, boys, men and popular culture. U of W says that men’s studies emerged as early as the 1970s, filling a gap left by women’s studies which had not dealt with what academics call the gendered construction of masculinity, and masculinity’s complex relation to power. "When Women’s Studies became Women’s and Gender Studies several years ago, we incorporated perspectives from men’s studies into our courses, but this is the first time we have devoted a course specifically to the area," said Prof. Pauline Greenhill, who is teaching the course next winter. This course examines myths, theories, and images of boys and men that shape how they are represented and how they represent themselves in popular culture, particularly in feature films. The course will focus on North American masculinities, examining gender, race, class, age, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, ability and other categories of identity, said Greenhill. Lecturers will look at westerns, comedies, action, science fiction and other genres. Topics addressed will include work, relationships, boyhood and violence.
What do you make out about this Pauline? I never heard her name before, and going by the books she's authored or co-authored she seems to be into "women's folklore". I think it would be better if a man actually taught men's studies. But that's just me.

Fifth Columns are established fairly early on in predicable conflicts.

What do we know of Prof. Pauline Greenhill ? Is she 'on-side' or a virus? Is she a Good Woman fellow-fighter side-by-side with such women as Jennifer Morse, or is she a secret reader of the Female Eunuch?

Is this Program a disguised 'Women's Studies' side-stream, a tributary to sweep manginas into the mainstream of feminism?

Jennifer Morse seeks Men's Studies Departmants to replace Wymyn's Studies Depts as they are, she suggests, more likely to be trustworthy. (See - hear - my podcast "Sacred Cows in the China Shop")

A female economist takes on a leading Feminist in a debate. Women’s Studies Depts’ have no legitimacy and should be closed. They are academically bogus and “Ideologically biased”. A men’s Studies Dept could be better trusted to seek truth and answers to urgent social questions. Women dominate Universities and are driven by bias.

A ‘Life studies dept’ would serve society better than a ‘woman’s studies Dept. “50 million unborn babies have died for women’s rights”. Enough is enough. University cobbled Feminists ‘cherry pick’ studies and ignore contrary evidence to present false ideas to the public, corrupting their intellectual obligation and actively creating and manipulating a negative and destructive image about men.

against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. “
    (and within ourselves)
    (Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Yes jimj, it is wise to greet any course in "men's studies" with great suspicion, especially when presented by a woman (what do women know about being male?) and most emphatically when the female in question comes with massive feminist baggage:

    http://www.uwinnipeg.ca/index/WOM-paulineg

This sentence too - "what academics call the gendered construction of masculinity, and masculinity’s complex relation to power" gets my antennae twitching. Academics who use such terms are invariably steeped in misandry and can't wait to give us a long list of everything that is wrong with us.

"Topics addressed will include work, relationships, boyhood and violence." Why violence? Work, relationships and boyhood play huge roles in our lives for sure, but how does violence fit in with that? It has played virtually no part in my life, and I suspect plays very little part in the lives of most men. But those with great ill-will towards the male sex will always work it into the picture as if it is integral to masculinity.

This course is starting to look like a job-creation exercise for another professional male-basher. Maybe her wimmins studies classes are failing to attract enough students and she feels the need to change tack.

Re: Univ. of Winnipeg Men's Studies Course?

i forwarded this to a friend

I agree with you and I sent this to Professor Jeffrey Asher who was the last man-indeed the last person-to teach a men's studies course in Canada (in the 90's in Montreal) until the feminists forced him out. Do a Google on him and see,
    i hope he responds

isn't u.of winnipeg a dikefest to begin with?

it is my understanding that this university despises men and is run by a couple of lesbians, from what i understand they cannot even have a dance-no males

Re: feminist-run U of Winnipeg. I know of one woman, who was Mayor of Winnipeg in the 1990s that runs the "University of Winnipeg Foundation", a fundraising organization. I think she is a feminist. 99.999% sure. I think there is/was also one of the higher ups at the U of W that caused Henry Makow to lose his job there -- Constance Rooke.
