Second driver to face vehicular homicide charges after release from hospital

    By EVAN McLEAN
    Staff writer

A U.S. Highway 101 collision, which likely was caused by a Sequim woman who was driving under the influence of alcohol, took the life of a 25-year-old Sequim man on Oct. 7.

Benjamin M. Merscher, 25, was killed in a head-on collision shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and Kitchen-Dick Road.

Washington State Patrol detectives reported the two drivers were headed in opposite directions when Engre L. Brown, 27, crossed the highway’s center line while headed west toward Port Angeles in her 2001 Volkswagon Golf and collided head-on with Merscher’s 1998 Honda Civic as he was headed toward Sequim.

After the crash, Brown’s vehicle came to a stop facing east in the westbound lane. Merscher’s vehicle stopped facing west in the eastbound lane. Merscher was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Patrol troopers immediately closed the highway in both directions while paramedics took the surviving driver to a site where she could be air lifted via helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The highway was reopened at 7:15 a.m.

Brown suffered a leg fracture and possible internal injuries, according to a State Patrol report. Her injuries were too severe to book her into jail but she was arrested for vehicular homicide, according to a State Patrol spokesperson.

“We had both troopers and detectives on scene because the driver that reportedly caused the collision was arrested for vehicular homicide,” Washington State Patrol public information officer Krista Hedstrom said. “The driver was not booked, however, due to the need to have injuries treated at the hospital.”

Hedstrom said that due to the severity of the collision and the pending homicide charge, troopers had hospital personnel take blood from the suspect to test for alcohol and drugs.

“The blood draw in this case is different than a regular (driving under the influence), where the person has a choice about being tested,” Hedstrom said. “With a vehicular homicide, the person is tested regardless.”

Brown and Merscher were the only people involved in the incident and both were wearing their seat belts.

Merscher graduated from Sequim High School in 2001.

    Whats a Sequim?
The men's and fathers' movement needs to make sure it never sees females as the enemy,
but only misandry--whether from females or from males.
If not, we'll become like the bigoted feminists that this movement was formed to oppose.

Sequim is a town in Washington State - where Tera lives. ( Is that right, Tera?)

Yes...Sequim is where I live. And Sequim's not a big place. Lots of us knew Ben. Ben was a bright kid with a bright future. Why do the good always die so young?

Ahh, personal friend... sorry for your loss, Tera.
The most offensive thing you can do to a feminist is treat her with FULL equality.

Very sorry to hear about your loss and the loss of this young man's family.

Of all the stupid things a person can do drunk driving is the most senseless.
