The Real Beauty School is giving low self-esteem a failing grade.
The Dove Self-Esteem Fund held the first self-esteem summit yesterday in Toronto. A panel of experts spoke with mentors, teachers, parents and young girls about the impact of the media, relationships and everyday life on girls' self-esteem.
"Globally, girls worry about their beauty, whether they wear burkas or Birkenstocks," said Jessica Weiner, the global ambassador for the Dove Self-Esteem Fund.
Two new online videos promoting media awareness along with a new website made for girls ages 11 to 16 were introduced.
"There is an epidemic of low self-esteem that is happening in our daughters and young girls," said Debbie Gordon, managing director of media literacy organization Mediacs.
The summit also revealed statistics from the Real Truth About Beauty study that found 92 per cent of young women around the world want to change an aspect of their appearance and only 2 per cent of women globally consider themselves beautiful.
"It's so hard these days to get positive images for young girls," said Joanna Reynolds, mother of two daughters.
The Dove Self-Esteem fund also started a pilot mentor program called Girls for Girls, currently being tested at Henry Street high school in Whitby. Female students in Grade 12 hold workshops for other female students in Grade 10 on image, school and other topics.
"We hope to make a difference in someone else's life," said Anum Ajaci, one of the mentors.
"I think there's information that we have that they can use in their lives too."

Re: The Real Beauty School
right.. but since most women all look fat and grotty en masse surely the peer group cantbe to blame?
is it perhaps more the magazines etc they buy?
Seem to be obsessed with diet etc..
Then, on the other hand, they are obsessed with the idea that they should be accepted as they are..
I think this issue more than any other shows how universally stupid women are..
They have a problem, they look fat and grotty..
they get this impression from 2 places...
1. the mirror..
2. their chosen media role models..
In order to sort out their problem, they take the female concept of wanting the best of both worlds to ist ridiculous conclusion..
The full heartedly do both of the following things..
Seek out role models that tell them its ok to be a fat grot bag, "its whats inside that counts"....
Since they still would rather be slim and sexy, they seek out role models that are slim and sexy and their diet tips..
being female, the go on all manner of diets..
And they do the following..
Example diet.. Slimfats.. drink two cups of dogsnot every day..
eat a carrot.. and a boiled hamster..
Do that for 13 weeks and lose a stone..
That sounds great.. they can stick to that diet...
And inbetween, they will eat whatever else they want..
because.. They are doing the diet???
femilogic.. its wonderful!
And has predictable results!

Re: The Real Beauty School
My self-atttitude is more like that of a middle-aged short, fat, balding male than that of a typical female....I look in the mirror and see myself as better looking than I probably am!

The way I see it, as long as I love what I see in the mirror (and I do), no one else's opinion matters much at all."I just owe almost everything to my father and it's passionately interesting for me that the things that I learned in a small town, in a very modest home, are just the things that I believe have won the election." ----former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

Re: The Real Beauty School
100 perfucking cent correct!!
If you look good, you feel good, you look good..
If you can just feel good, then you look good!
Its all in the mind..
i am a 6ft shortarse with bulges everywhere (pecs, biceps, trousers) and a ridiculous 12" trouser snake that is usually chomping at the bit for anything with wool or fur that it can find..
In the eyes of most animals, i am just a depraved sex beast, but.. I look in the mirror and see a suave and sophisticated ram with impeccable manners, two lovely curly horns and a traditional modest and unassuming tail..
And you know what, my success with the flock is amazing..
Sometimes, i dont even need to use my crook!!

Re: The Real Beauty School
You're right, my man, it IS all in the mind! If you think it, you ARE it!
My husband once wryly noted that it seems that the only women I find superbly attractive are women who in some way, one way or another, remind me of myself. If they have long, dark brown hair, or are slightly zaftig, or are olive skinned, or are 36DD in the boob dept., I like them!
He once said that he is certain that if I possibly could, I would want to shag myself!
He is a wise man, who reads me well!
