Mothers Who Have Had Abortions At Higher Risk For Preterm Labor

Previous studies have shown that a mother who chooses to have an abortion puts her own health at risk. Now a study out of Finland shows that she puts other people at risk as well: her future children.
The researchers found that women who had multiple previous abortions were more likely to give birth before 28 weeks. That’s almost three months early.
“In terms of public health and practical implications, health education should contain information of the potential health hazards of repeat induced abortions, including very preterm birth and low birthweight in subsequent pregnancies,” said co-author of the study, Reija Klemetti, Ph.D., of the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki.
