Can someone explain to me the relative severity of two consecutive life sentences and 37.5 years please? I am not familiar with the US system and here in the UK, multiple sentences are usually served concurrently. Furthermore, many times life here means around 10 to 12 years.

There is 25 years to life meaning parole is possible after 25 years, then there is life with possibility of parole after a certain amount of prison time has elaped-up to the individual states and parole boards, then there is life without parole.
