    This is just so awful!

Woman in W.Pa. baby mystery charged with homicide

By RAMESH SANTANAM, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 22 minutes ago

PITTSBURGH - A woman suspected of cutting open a pregnant woman's uterus and stealing the baby has been charged with homicide, unlawful restraint and kidnapping, police said Sunday.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg, is charged in the death of Kia Johnson, 18, of McKeesport. Curry-Demus is accused of taking the baby boy to a Pittsburgh hospital and claiming it was her own.
Johnson's body was found Friday in Curry-Demus's apartment. The body was positively identified through dental records, Allegheny County Medical Examiner Karl Williams said Sunday.
In the criminal complaint, police said that video surveillance at the Allegheny County Jail from Tuesday afternoon shows Curry-Demus talking with Johnson for several minutes. The women were at the jail visiting different inmates, police said.
The clothing Johnson is seen wearing on the surveillance tape was consistent with the garments found on her body, police said.
Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said the jail was the last time Johnson was seen alive.
Curry-Demus was being held in county jail on Sunday and it was not immediately clear whether she had an attorney. A lawyer who had represented her previously did not immediately return a phone message left Sunday.
No one was home at the McKeesport home of Johnson's father on Sunday.
In the criminal complaint, police said Johnson's body was found bound at the wrists and ankles with duct tape, and there were layers of duct tape and plastic covering much of her head. Her body was wrapped in a comforter and garbage bags and placed under the headboard of the bed in the master bedroom.
Williams said Johnson appeared to have been dead for about two days. She "had a wound to the abdomen consistent with the removal of a baby," Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said.
"A very sharp instrument" was used to cut open Johnson's belly, he said.
Authorities said Johnson was 36 weeks pregnant, and they were trying to determine whether she was alive when the baby was removed. They also are awaiting toxicology tests to find out whether she was drugged. Test results are not expected for several weeks.
Police said in the complaint that Curry-Demus denied meeting Johnson but that she told investigators that her fingerprints would be on the duct tape and plastic used to wrap the body.
Curry-Demus showed up at the hospital Thursday with a newborn that still had the umbilical cord attached, police said. Tests later proved that she was not the mother.
Police said Curry-Demus initially told investigators she bought the baby for $1,000 from the its mother. She later said two people brought a pregnant woman to her apartment Tuesday evening, removed the baby the next day and gave it to her. She said she then took the newborn to her sister's apartment and told her she had just given birth, police said.
The victim's cousin, Tereka Nesbit, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Johnson told an aunt about two weeks before she disappeared that she had met a couple of women in the jail's visiting area and had gone to their homes after a jail visit.
"There's no question she's trusting," said Nesbit, 33, of McKeesport. "She was so kind and sweet." She said a grown man would not have been able to lure her cousin, "but a friendly woman would. She would have been thrilled to talk to anybody about (her) baby."
Nesbit called her cousin's death "unfathomable."
"She suffered so much," Nesbit said. "We're sick about this."
Wilkinsburg Police Chief Ophelia Coleman said Sunday the child was "under observation." Williams earlier said the baby was "apparently doing well." The hospital has declined to release any information about the child.
In 1990, Curry-Demus, then known as Andrea Curry, was accused of stabbing a woman in an alleged plot to steal the woman's infant. A day after that stabbing, Curry-Demus snatched a 3-week-old baby girl from a hospital after the child's 16-year-old mother had gone home for the night. The baby was found unharmed with Curry-Demus at her home the next day.
Curry-Demus pleaded guilty in 1991 to various charges from both incidents and got three to 10 years in prison, according to court records. She was paroled in August 1998.

Slain Woman's Baby Stolen by Another Woman

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08203/898420-56.stm

"Kia Johnson, a sweet, book-smart 18-year-old, was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her baby boy, due July 30. She'd already had some sporadic contractions, relatives said, and baby shower gifts filled her apartment."
"she befriended suspect Andrea Curry-Demus at the jail, where the suspect also went to visit her husband, Raymond Demus, who is incarcerated there for rape."

"Ms. Curry-Demus, 37, was charged with homicide, four days after she showed up at West Penn Hospital claiming she had just given birth to a newborn boy, his umbilical cord still attached. Medical officials determined she had not."

"Court records indicate that Ms. Johnson's steady boyfriend, Terrell D. Barnes, 19, of Mc-Keesport, has been lodged at the jail since March 24 on two dozen charges from four separate incidents. The charges against Mr. Barnes, who also uses the name Terrel, range from burglary, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment to false imprisonment, possession of a firearm and terroristic threats."

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/20/...iref=hpmostpop

"Curry-Demus befriended a woman who had just given birth but later attacked her with a knife and tried to steal the baby, the paper said, citing the court records. The woman's husband intervened, the newspaper reported, and she fled.

The next day, she went to a hospital and befriended a woman who had brought her 3-week-old daughter to the hospital to be treated for meningitis, the Tribune-Review said. When the woman went home for the night, Curry-Demus left the hospital with the baby. It was found at her home, unharmed, the following day.

In 1991, according to the records, she pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from both incidents"

There are so many things about this story that jump out at me that I don't know where to start. Obviously, the victim, Kia Johnson, and her family didn't deserve to be victims of this brutal, evil crime. With that in mind, I couldn't help but notice that Kia Johnson, the "book smart", "sweet", "innocent" girl, in this story got knocked up by a bad-boy thug who is in jail for 24 different criminal charges. Calling her a "book smart", "sweet", "innocent" is irresponsible journalism. In reality. another American woman made horrible choices, with disastrous and tragic consequences. The victim met her murderer at the jail while they were both visiting their bad-boy thug boyfriends. It's not just black women who are making terrible choices, the same is true for woman of all races and economic backgrounds in America. For nearly 50 years women have been given every opportunity, benefit, and entitlement in America without ever being held the least bit responsible for the terrible choices that they make in exercising those opportunities, benefits, and entitlements. It's insane to give 51% of the population great power without demanding that they also accept great responsibility.

The second part of this story is about the female murder and kidnapper, Andrea Curry-Demus. It's not the
first time that this monster, Andrea Curry-Demus tried to kidnap a baby. She had attempted to kidnap babies at least twice before. When an American man attempts to kidnap a baby, it's rightfully taken seriously, and dealt with harshly. When an American woman attempts to kidnap a baby, she received a slap on the wrist. When an American man kills and mutilates somebody, he's rightfully identified as a monster and receives life in prison or the death penalty. When an American woman kills a baby or a man, she gets a slap on the wrist 99% of the time. Even American women killing other women get a lighter sentence 99% of the time. It's insane to grant impunity for their crimes to 51% of the population. This is not the first American woman who cut open another woman to steal her baby like it was a piece of property... it has happened before:

If you follow the news in America, you will see stories every day about women murders, women child abusers, women teacher rapists, etcetera.
It wasn't always like this in America... there was a time prior to the rule of Feminism/Misandry in America when husband murderers, baby murderers, female child abusers, female teacher rapists, etcetera were practically non-existent. There are still countries today such as Mexico, the Philippines, many countries in South America, and others where these acts of evil by women are still practically non-existent. In those countries, women are still held responsible for their actions.

Re: This is just so awful!

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35060458...mental_health/

PITTSBURGH - A woman who lured a pregnant teenager to her apartment, drugged her, cut out her baby, then killed her and tried to pass the infant off as hers was found guilty but mentally ill of second-degree murder and kidnapping.Monday's verdict against Andrea Curry-Demus, while supported by evidence of her long history of mental illness, was "perhaps more merciful than the defendant deserves," Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning said.
In finding Curry-Demus not guilty of first-degree murder, Manning said he wasn't satisfied that her psychotic delusions allowed her to form the intent to kill.
Curry-Demus, 40, of Wilkinsburg, will be formally sentenced in March, but the second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life prison sentence without parole. She will serve part of her sentence in a prison mental hospital until doctors conclude her illness improves enough for her to serve the rest in prison.
Prosecutors sought a first-degree murder conviction, which would have carried the same penalty as the second-degree murder count because prosecutors weren't seeking the death penalty. The defense wanted her found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The family of the 18-year-old victim, Kia Johnson, of McKeesport, was relieved Curry-Demus will spend the rest of her life behind bars, but some members discounted her claims of mental illness.
"She's cold. She has ice running through her blood. For her to do something like this, you have to be a monster," said Johnson's mother, Darlene Lee, 45.
Manning, the prosecution and defense all agreed Curry-Demus was obsessed with babies. She has no children, but claimed to have had miscarriages and a baby who died of sudden infant death syndrome.
Curry-Demus met Johnson at the Allegheny County Jail in July 2008 while visiting different inmates. She had already been telling her family and friends that she was pregnant. She even put her name on another woman's ultrasound picture to show people and decorated a nursery.
Prosecutor Mark Tranquilli had evidence that showed Curry-Demus befriended Johnson with offers of clothes for her unborn son and offered her a ride home from the jail on July 15, 2008.
After getting Johnson to her Wilkinsburg apartment, Curry-Demus drugged her, bound her with duct tape and cut the baby from her. She wrapped Johnson's body in more tape, plastic wrap and bags and a comforter before stuffing it in a space behind Curry-Demus' bed.
Curry-Demus then told her sister, who lived across the hall, that she had just given birth. Her story began to unravel after hospital tests showed she wasn't the mother. She initially told police she bought the baby from a crack addict for $1,000, but police found Johnson's body after people began reporting a stench coming from her apartment.
Manning recounted those steps, saying they beckon responses such as, "She must be crazy."
"Being crazy, doing something insane, does not mean you are not criminally responsible," he said.
Lee said she hopes Curry-Demus gets no peace in prison and that she sees her daughter "when she lays down in the bed to go to sleep at night, when she wakes up in the morning." She also said she hopes to forgive Curry-Demus someday, saying harboring anger won't change anything.
Eric Johnson said his daughter volunteered with him at the local Salvation Army feeding the homeless and worked as candy striper at a hospital. He said he knows she is in heaven looking down on her son, Kian. The boy, 18 months old, is doing well and living with relatives, he said.
Curry-Demus chose to have Manning decide the case instead of a jury. He also found her guilty but mentally ill of unlawful restraint.
Her attorney, Christopher Patarini, said they were disappointed in the outcome, but he had not discussed with her the possibility of an appeal.
Johnson's killing was not the first time Curry-Demus tried to get an infant. In May 1990, she stabbed a woman in an apparent plot to steal her newborn and the next day kidnapped another baby from a hospital.
She pleaded guilty in January 1991 to kidnapping, concealing the whereabouts of a child and related offenses, and was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison. She also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was placed on probation for 10 years.

Woman Guilty of Cutting Baby From Teen's Womb

There is a type of woman who is so baby hungry that she will kill another woman for her child. I am sure that there are mental health experts that atribute it to some kind of syndrome but either way woman like this should be put away and never let loose again.
Do not ever suppose that a small group of people can never change the world. INDEED it is the only thing that ever has.

Exactly. Awhile ago I watched a documentary about women who kill/steal other women's babies when they are conceived. It's truly despisable to see such act, to steal a child that does not belongs to you.

I always find the mental health excuse ridiculous as hell. The fact that someone commits such as crime is telling us that the person in question has mental problems. It's basicly like telling a peadophile should be punished more leniently because he/she got 'mental issues' and thus 'can't help it', but the whole exhibition act itself testifies of a mental issue on it's own. The laws (allegedly) exist to punish people who exhibit these malicious 'issues' as they are a danger to society in the first place...

i'm just glad the victim is female and not male so that even females start seeing why the sentencing discount is not in their best interest, seeing that that's what will only get the point across. It's not enough that females get a discount for male victims, it has to AFFECT THEM. If more and more female criminals had female victims there would be a conundrum rising about WHAT TO DO??? "The victim is female so something must be done, but the perp is female so she's not at fault!! WHAT TO DO????"

Re: This is just so awful!

    The whole affair is evil.

From the little I know of this case (above) it is fairly clear that the woman is mad, but not necessarily bad. There is insufficient evidence reported for bad.

Just on the face of it, she is mad. She might be bad.

This sort of callous, cruel and frankly evil action is nowhere near the 'normal' or even the bizzarre.

Mad people can do evil, just as bad people can. I am presuming that the Judge took some psychiatric evidence into account - but I do not have a lot of confidence in judges at the best of times.

It is a mark of our 'freedom' that people can 'visit' the cruel and wicked who are incarcerated. It is within norms of human nature (imperfect as it is) for some people to fall in love with the mad and the bad.

Tragedy is part of the human condition.

One also has to realize that the abnormal, mentally and morally, can form quite large sub-cultures. While we as MRAs might decry and wail about all the innocent men in jail, we also have to acknowledge that they are in there with a lot of very bad men. There are a lot of mad and bad women in the same 'group', even if they are simply visiting. It would be an infringement of Liberty to monitor and supervise all of them. So we have to expect crime, evil and the completely bizzarre to occur and just clean up after the fact.

yes, she was suffering from psychosis and had a history of domestic abuse

are you totally deranged??? Psychiatry is complete bunkum, and there's rarely anything existing known as "psychosis" unless you have an IQ of 30. Most crimes deemed "insane" are not because the person KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND THAT IT WAS WRONG

Diogenes, I have no idea what your beef is. I am expressing an opinion as carefully as I can given the limited information available abut this case.

Your mother has no part in this as far as I am aware and it is not about you.

I am astonished that you are offended by my very guarded view about people not related in any way to you (I take it this is not a relative of yours) and I had no intent to offend you.

You ask if I am totally deranged. Not as far as I know. A little maybe.

    And you?

I meant MY thread about mother infanticide

i was expressing contempt of your poo pooing for this woman, who you think might not be necessarily bad. You have swallowed the Kool-Aid about so-called “psychosis” and think that just because her crime was so vile, she might have just been mad and not bad. Aka, poo pooing for the woman
