Jamie Oliver Talks About Food & Obesity In America

I could not help but think while watching this that the root of the problem is feminism's driving women out of the home and into the work place. Women don't want to stay home and cook, so now we are seeing just how important it is for women to do so. Obesity-related deaths are at the top of the list of causes of death, and homicide is at the bottom!!!

Yes, there are companies and High Fructose Corn Syrup to blame too, but why are people buying garbage food? Because there is little or no time to cook. Why? Because so many women are working full time and have no time to.

My arse there isn't time to cook, mate.
Pretty much IMO, it comes down to the laziness of society in general.
People these days, men and women, want something quick and "easy".
Unfortunately, easy means overly processed foods "cooked" in a bloody microwave oven.

There was a "Food Survey" done here in New Zealand in 1998, as to the amount of pot and pans in any given house-hold and the frequency with which they were used.

It made for very POOR reading indeed, you have some places that have the full compliment of the best cookware available.
Pretty much, they are there as a show-piece, not as a realistic cooking utensil.
After all, you can't make McD's or KFC in your own cook-ware can you?

    Or can you?
Maybe you can make something that you have some control over the ingredients that might go into a burger or fried chicken.
Those that refuse to think outside of the square, will un-doubtedly continue to ingest a large amount of chemicals borne by mass-production.

I build my own burgers here, from the ground up, taking the time and the care, makes it taste better.

As I said before, if you need to put time into anything, it should be what it is going into your (or your childrens) body.

    Actually Sam,
That is where you are wrong.
Those of us that have a burgeoning garden every year (weather permitting), keep seed stock.
So any sort of conspiracy theory about Big Business trying to kill farmers crops, seems a tad silly.

Every farmer carries seed stock from the last season, that is a given.

Sure, there are people who take the time to cook healthy food, however, for the average family with both father and mother working, many, many meals are either eaten in restaurants (often fast food), delivered, or frozen. Much of this is done for the convenience of the working woman.

There's some merit to the OP's argument, but it's mostly about companies shoving crap in the food.

Also surely family breakdown is just as much an issue. I.e. it's FAR less effort per head and far more economical to cook for four than it is to cook for one or two.

I disagree, with using stir-fry methods, a decent meal can be had in under 5 minutes.
Just get away from boiling or frying the crap out of the food you eat.

Re: Jamie Oliver Talks About Food & Obesity In America

Feminism has affected everything, including how we eat. I'll bet fast food has grown parallel to feminism.

I look at it like this. Throwing women into the workforce has benefitted corporations more than anyone else. They pay lower wages (supply and demand) but most families have two incomes so more money to spend overall. They (corporations) pay less but people buy more, especially where fast food is concerned since people have less time than they used to.

Ah but does it matter really? You could go eat McDonalds junk or make a box of Hamburger Helper, which one is better for you....NEITHER!

I know there will be some posters who tell us how we can eat healthy BUT MOST OF US DON'T HAVE OUR OWN FARMS. Heck, living in cities even a small garden is impossible so keep that holier than thou BS to yourselves. Most of us have to buy (not grow) preservative-ridden foods that are no better for us than fast food.

Exactly. My parents both work, my mother a full-time job including overwork frequently and my father works even more. Yet, unless the lazy buffoons, my mother always manages to cook a good dinner. Hence I don't buy the 'I don't got time' excuse when people complain about how they can't cook meals because of work.

Cause every family is like yours?

Maybe you'll buy the: "Bought food is no better than fast food" argument?

Not really. The way I see it is that you don't have to spend whole afternoons to cook something. Why don't cook something you can also warm up the next day for instance? The average person is in my opinion too lazy too cook something for themselves. If it is possible for people who almost do nothing but working, then it doesn't seems unreasonable to believe it should be possible for allot of other people as well.

Ah yes, reheat. In the microwave....yeah...that's healthy. May as well go out and get a nice fat burger for all the nutritional value you'll get from nuked food.

Most people AREN'T too lazy to cook for themselves acrually. However, it seems that no matter what you cook, your cooking method is bad.

Don't boil, fry, nuke, bake, steam, etc...they all have thier downsides and if the food is loaded with unhealthy preservatives...then the method doesn't matter since the food is junk from the get go.

    <sigh>

You wanna eat healthy, you gotta grow it yourself...something most people can't do.

Folks, we have a witchhunt beginning here, fat people are under attack the way smokers have been for the last 20 years.

    Yeah mate,
Smokers have been vilified for a time.
There was a thesis put foward by the Auckland University about how smokers are the largest tax-payers (NZ$790million) versus their care ($220 million) in hospitals.
Cigarettes here are taxed at 300% of their own value.
To say the least, this thesis was pulled rather quick, as we would not like the general public knowing this, would we?

Now, if there was an idea to lessen or ban fast-food tomorrow, there would be a bloody big out-cry.
Imagine a 300% tax on your next Big Mac?

    Having said that,
We grow all our own vegetables here, it's not that hard.
    We have at the moment:
    Pea's
    Corn
    Potatoes
    Tomatoes
    Broad Beans
    Brocoli
    Cauliflower
    Garlic
    Onions.

And just where did you see me speak about healthy food? For all I care, people can go eat as much Mc Donalds or only grown vegetables to their hearts content. I'm only stating my view on what I think of that it's impossible to find time to cook something (healthy or unhealthy) on what I see in my environment.
