Princess was no angel, claims feminist icon

Germaine Greer, the Australian academic and feminist, has launched a verbal attack on the late princess Diana in the run-up to the 10th anniversary of her death, a British newspaper reported on Sunday.

"I have come to the conclusion that she was a devious moron," Greer told the Edinburgh International Book Festival on Saturday, The Independent on Sunday said.

Diana, princess of Wales, died on August 31, 1997, in a Paris car crash, aged 36. She had divorced heir to the British throne Prince Charles a year earlier upon which she lost the title, Her Royal Highness (HRH).

Greer severely criticised Diana during a presentation about her new book, which is about the life of William Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway.

While Greer described Hathaway as Shakespeare's "angel", she used the platform to express her view that Diana was no angel at all, the weekly paper noted.

"One of the things I have been puzzled by is why her whole life was such a mess," Greer was reported as saying.

"It is an insane job and, in history, all but one of the princesses of Wales have come to a sticky end - stickier than hers.

"I am also interested in why she couldn't manage life after being HRH."

She went on to criticise Diana's alleged relationships with "married men".

"And this is the angel that people want to crown," Greer added.

I can't wait for the attacks on this low life when her card is called.

It is low and shabby speaking ill of the dead. Old germ is running out of things to say to try to shock...If the marriage between Diana and Charles had worked they would have done much good.It was a tragedy as is most of what we see around us this days.Diana seemed to me to like men a bit too much.
moral failings yes but there goes us all. She did show love to people and however imperfect she was ,thats why people love her.Many there are who could learn from her in this count.

I never understood why. Maybe you have to be a Brit with some connection to the royal family to really "get it". Diana always seemed kind of ordinary to me. I had more respect for Elizabeth, having been through the war, and not airing her dirty laundry in public.

Perhaps that's what some people liked about her? she was ordinary. She didn't seem to be afraid of getting her "hands dirty", like with the charity work she did, I couldn't imagine the Queen doing that (Actually, I don't really know what the Queen does). It did seem odd to me how people reacted to her death... and why do people feel the need to air their dirty laundry in public?

Male Brits have known for several decades that Diana was a devious but photogenic moron. We didn't need the lately-enlightened G.G. to state the obvious.

Methinks the sloth-brained Germaine might even work her way back to being an MRA before she slowly dies alone with her cats.
