Harriet Harman: I'll put women in charge of banks

I'll put women in charge of banks: Harriet Harman's plans to use equality laws to challenge macho City culture

    Quote:
Harried Harman wants to use controversial new equality laws to pack the boards of nationalised banks with women.
Labour's deputy leader is determined to boost the proportion of female workers in the financial sector and end what she calls 'pay discrimination' in the City.
She said last night that legal powers championed by her to discriminate in favour of minorities could help achieve her ambition.
Some women MPs have claimed that the 'testosterone-fuelled' financial meltdown could have been avoided if there had been more women in decision-making positions.
But critics fear Miss Harman is signalling the Government plans to become too closely involved in the daily running of the banks.
Ministers have always been clear they want to keep Whitehall interference in RBS and Lloyds, in which taxpayers have a majority stake, to a minimum.
Last night, at a Left-wing meeting on 'Women In The Recession' in Parliament, Miss Harman said so-called 'positive action' would be 'there for us' to put women on the boards of bailed-out banks.
Miss Harman's intervention came as she launched a staunch defence of her Equality Bill, which allows firms to choose women or minorities ahead of equally-qualified white males without risking being sued.
'Sometimes we have to take scary methods in order to achieve worthwhile results,' she told a mainly female audience.
'It is about saying, "because you are a woman I'm going to put you in this promotion".'
Miss Harman, who earlier this week was forced to deny she would stand for the leadership if Gordon Brown resigned, also made a series of populist appeals in her address.

She claimed that because women generally remained homemakers, the recession caused them to fear not only for their own jobs, but also for their husband's, for their children's futures, and for elderly relatives.
'We have to worry more than men and we are definitely worrying more about the recession than men are,' she said.
Domestic violence could also increase because couples whose relationships had broken down could not sell their home and live apart, she suggested.
On average, women earn 22.6 per cent less than men. But this rises to 40 per cent in the City - worse than in any other sector.
Proposals in the Equality Bill will force employers to reveal how much they pay men compared with women, which critics say could hinder job creation.
But Miss Harman, the Leader of the Commons, insisted last night: 'Fair employers have nothing to fear but unfair employers have nowhere to hide.'
In a statement likely to send shivers through the business community, she also insisted the Equality Bill - which MPs will debate next week - 'will be the catalyst for further change'.
Critics warn the plan, dubbed 'socialism in one clause', will burden firms with more red tape as they struggle in the recession.

Re: Harriet Harman: I'll put women in charge of banks

And women aren't prone to be greedy and corrupt given the opportunity?

Look at the feminists throughout every western country when they've attained power (particularly political). Worse than greedy and corrupt, they're vicious, hateful, unjust, tyrannical and void of morality.

No doubt it'll be fellow feminists Harman will install in key banking positions. So how will trepidation, risk-aversion and procrastination fare against confidence, risk-taking and seizing the moment (insight) over the short and long-term? Recessions are cyclical inevitabilities, but expect the frequency of such occurences to increase (or a avoidable prolonging) with the introduction of socialism into the banking system.

It's more arrogant and delusional bullshit - that if women are in charge everything will be ok. I think the 'holier-than-thou' position has it's origins in the fairytale mentality of 'sugar and spice' that belies reality, and stretches credulity to the extreme.

This feminist nutcase is literally changing every facet of English society for the worse, and there's nobody in parliament with the balls to forestall her misandric crusade.

She publically denies that she is plotting to succeed Gordon Brown if he resigns or is ousted (probably by Harman's growing band of coconspirators). That's bunkum! She's personally enacted more new (anti-male) laws as Deputy, than the Prime Minister has done with all laws.

Imagine the reign of terror this rabid lunatic will unleash on all men if she becomes leader.

No doubt many despots tell themselves the same thing.

Notice how comrade Harman manages to mention the 'wage gap myth' and domestic violence in order to justify her socialist lunacy?

This is why it's of the upmost importance to dispel these feminist myths at every opportunity.

    Iceland appoints first female PM
    1st Feb 2009

Anti-government protests in Iceland have turned
increasingly violent in recent weeks [EPA]

Iceland has appointed Johanna Sigurdardottir as its first female and openly gay prime minister.

The cabinet, of the new centre-left government, sworn in on Sunday by Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, the president, must pull the country out of a recession which has almost bankrupted the state.
"I was today asked by the president of Iceland to finish forming the government, which has succeeded. That government will be based on new social values," Sigurdardottir said.

"For the short time this government will exist, we will emphasise assistance to businesses and families."
The appointment follows a week of upheaval in the island nation, which has seen the forced resignation of their conservative government over the economic crisis.
Sigurdardottir, a Social Democrat, is heading an interim minority coalition including the Left Green party and two independent ministers.

The coalition will rule until elections on April 25.

Sigurdardottir, who held a meeting with her cabinet and Grimsson on Sunday evening, said one of her first acts "will be to change the leadership of the central bank".
For the first time the cabinet's 10 posts are evenly split between men and women.

Steingrimur Sigfusson, the Left Green party leader, has been made finance minister. The appointment marks a move to the left after right-wing rule.

"Today, laissez-faire economic policy leaves Iceland, which is severely wounded after years of it running the government," Sigfusson said.

The new government said in a statement that it would conduct "a prudent fiscal policy" and protect the welfare state.

    Economic breakdown
Sigurdardottir, 66, is a former flight attendant and union organiser, and served as social affairs minister in the previous government.

She is the second openly gay national leader of modern times, after Per-Kristian Foss, who was briefly Norwegian prime minister in 2002.

Thousands of Iceland's 320,000 citizens have protested in recent months against their country's leadership. The country had been one of the richest in the world, until its banking system collapsed in the autumn due primarily to heavy debts.

Iceland's currency has collapsed, unemployment is expanding rapidly and thousands of people have lost their savings, forcing it to take $10bn in loans from the International Monetary Fund and other countries.

It's not shadenfreude that can be read between the lines when Halla Tomasdottir talks about Iceland's financial crisis and her country's bankruptcy, but there may be a bit of satisfaction. "A lot had gone wrong, some things didn't make sense and it couldn't go on that way," the economist says. "We warned it would happen."

Halla was general director of the chamber of commerce when she issued those warnings, but nobody wanted to listen to her advice. She then parted ways and started her own company together with banker Kristin Petursdottir. Kristin had been a manager at the British subsidiary of the crisis-stricken Icelandic bank Kaupthing. Together, Halla and Kristin formed Audur Capital, a financial and investment company that would take a new path.

They established it almost two years ago to the date. Today, Audur Capital is one of the few firms in the Icelandic finance sector that is actually turning a profit -- perhaps the only one, though no one dares to say exactly. The company is growing, with 22 employees already. "We're still hiring," says a proud Halla Tomasdottir. The company currently has around 15 million Icelandic krona (around €90 million) in assets. At Audur, there's a simple recipe for success. "We've brought greater female values into the financial world," says Halla. The company isn't interested in investments that quickly generate high yields. Instead, they focus on sustainable investments in projects that make as much sense socially and environmentally as they do for the investors themselves. The women call their business maxim "emotional capital," or "profit with principles."

Re: Harriet Harman: I'll put women in charge of banks

Harriet Harman reminds me of Cixi
The "How to take the longest reigning monarchy in the world and destroy it "award should go to Cixi of China. Chinese society was and is very partriarchal, even today, and they, like the Russians, didn’t like having female empresses very often. Then came along Cixi to prove the old adage that traditions have some meaning behind them, and you violate them at your own perial.
Step 1: Sleep Your Way to the Top
In September, 1851, the future Empress Dowager Cixi was with sixty other Manchu girls in the selection process for concubines for the new Xianfeng Emperor, and was one of the lucky girls selected on that occasion.

Step 2: It’s Better to be Lucky than Smart

In 1855 she gave birth to Tung-Chih, the only male heir of the Xianfeng Emperor, obtaining an elevated rank.

Step 3: Pull Strings like a Fox or Weasel
By the time of Xianfeng Emperor's death, Empress Dowager Cixi had become a brilliant Medusa. While waiting for an astrologically favorable time to transport the coffin back to the capital, she made her indirect moves. I guess it is best to do such things before your husband is 6 feet under, than have some idea of class. I guess in morning you can be more sneaky.

Step 4: Take Advantage of Other Women Who Aren’t Weaselly
Taking advantage of the late emperor's number one wife Empress Ci'an's naivete and good nature, Cixi suggested that they become co-reigning Empress Dowagers, with powers exceeding the Eight Regent Ministers. Tensions grew between the Eight Regent Ministers, and the Empress Dowagers. The ministers did not like Empress Dowager Cixi's interference in political matters, and the frequent confrontations left the Empress Dowager Ci'an so angry that she refused to come to court audiences, leaving Empress Dowager Cixi alone to deal with the ministers. During the periods of co-regency with the Empress Dowager Ci'an, Empress Dowager Cixi used her considerable intellectual stubborn ambition to queer off Ci'an to effectively take control. Ci'an took no part in running state business, and until she died in 1881, Cixi reigned supreme.

Step 5: Surround Yourself with "Yes" Eunuchs
(As if normal eunuch bureaucrats are just too threatening)
Secretly, Cixi began collecting the support of talented ministers, soldiers and others who were ignored or hated by the eight regent ministers, and thus spreading disunity in the ranks of the state as she collected her power base.

Step 6: Re-write History Forever so You Can Get Rid of a Small Problem Today
History was re-written at Cixi command, and the Regents were dismissed for having carried out incompetent negotiations with the "barbarians" which had caused Xianfeng Emperor to flee to Rehe "greatly against his will". Empress Dowager Cixi and Prince Gong produced a document called the "Eight Guilts of Regent Ministers", which included allegations of altering the late Xianfeng Emperor's wills, causing his death, and stealing power from the two Empress Dowagers. Yes as a Medusa you should know how to write sneaky lies about others, as you are well acquainted with all such measures. Who cares about history for power is more important!

Step 7: Isolate a Young Male from Sex to Make Him Unstable & Horny
Later the Tongzhi Emperor proceeded to spend all of his time with his new Empress, at the expense of his four Imperial Consorts and Concubines. Empress Dowager Cixi became hostile to the Jiashun Empress and told them that they were both still young and should spend more time studying how to effectively manage the country. After her warning was ignored, Empress Dowager Cixi finally ordered the Emperor and the Empress to separate and to continue single-heartedly on their studies and preparation of becoming ruling sovereigns. However, the Tongzhi Emperor, who could no longer cope with his grievance and loneliness, grew more and more ill-tempered. He began to treat his servants badly and to beat them for minor offenses. Eventually, a palace eunuch secretly urged the Emperor to go out of the Forbidden City and enjoy himself in a prostitute house. The Tongzhi Emperor agreed, and for several evenings the Emperor disguised himself as a commoner and secretly spent the nights in the prostitute houses of Beijing. Finally, the Tongzhi Emperor caught syphilis and red pimples grew all over his face and body. Empress Dowager Cixi regarded this as a humiliating scandal and warned the imperial doctors not to speak of it. The doctors produced a lie that the Emperor had caught smallpox, and proceeded to give medicines and treatments accordingly. Within a few weeks, on January 13, 1875, the Emperor died. Some seventy-two days after the death of the Tongzhi Emperor, on March 27, the Jiashun Empress committed suicide, though some rumors suggest she died of starvation at Empress Dowager Cixi's behest. Ever get the feeling you are being played for the fool by a Medusa?

Step 8: Lie about Sexual Harassment to Destroy a Man
And you thought this is a new harassment for modern times? History says this is an old ploy. In 1885, Empress Dowager Cixi, showed more ambition and accused Prince Gong of molesting her during an audience. She downgraded him to "advisor", and promoted the more easily influenced Prince Chun. He was probably more handsone too. This was an important step toward Puyi becoming the Last Emperor.
Step 9: Rule from a Far, and Pull Strings from a Safe Distance
Until age nineteen, the Guangxu Emperor was "aided" in his rule by the Empress Dowager Cixi. Even after he began formal rule, Empress Dowager Cixi continued to influence his decisions and actions, despite residing for a period of time at the Imperial Summer Palace which she had ordered Guangxu's father, the First Prince Chun, to construct, with the official intention not to intervene in politics.
Step 10: Back Stab Your Son’s Reforms so Your Old Fox-Eunuchs are Kept Happy
The Guangxu Emperor was more reform-minded than the conservative-leaning Empress Dowager Cixi. He wished to be more of a constitutional monarchy, as in Japan. In June 1898, the Guangxu Emperor began the Hundred Days' Reform, aimed at a series of sweeping changes politically, legally, and socially. For a brief time, after the supposed retirement of the Empress Dowager Cixi, the Guangxu Emperor, with the help of more progressive Qing mandarins like Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, issued edicts for a massive number of far-reaching modernizing reforms. Some government and military officials warned Cixi that the ming-shih (reformation bureau) had been geared toward conspiracy and didn’t like the reforms, or simply she thought she might be at risk or would lose her control, and thus moved to undermine her son instead of support him. Allegations of treason against the Emperor were made up, and Empress Dowager Cixi in September, 1898 resumed her role as regent and again took control of the country. The Guangxu Emperor was then taken to Ocean Terrace, a small palace on an island in the middle of a lake linked to the rest of the Forbidden City with only a controlled causeway. Empress Dowager Cixi would follow with an edict dictating the Guangxu Emperor's total disgrace and "not being fit to be Emperor." Although Empress Dowager Cixi never forced the Guangxu Emperor to abdicate, and his era, in name, continued until 1908, the Emperor lost all honours, respect, power, and privileges. He was effectly deballed! "Thanks mom!" Most of his supporters were exiled, and some were executed in public by Empress Dowager Cixi's officals .
Step 11: Support the Fashionable Mob & Run Away from a Fight at all Times
In 1900, Empress Dowager Cixi's support of the self-strengthening movement was again called into question when the Boxer Rebellion broke out in northern China. Eager to preserve traditional Chinese values, Empress Dowager Cixi threw in her lot with the rebels, making an official announcement of her support for the movement. When the Westerners responded by dispatching the Eight-Nation Alliance, the Chinese military, badly underdeveloped due to Empress Dowager Cixi's habit of funneling military funds and stopping reforms, was unable to prevent the technologically-advanced Allied army from marching on Peking and seizing the Forbidden City. "Who needs to study war when it is all about pulling subtle strings!
Step 12: Sign any Treaty to Keep the Slightest Amount of Your Personal Power as You Weaken 1000s of Years of Respect for the Monarchy
Determined to prevent another Chinese rebellion, the Western powers imposed a humiliating treaty on China. Cixi then signed the treaty and therfore stood opposed the creation of a national army or navy there after. Maybe she was anti-War?
Step 13: Worry about How Good Your Tomb Will Look after You Die, Instead of Trying to Stop Your Country Falling into Chaos
Empress Dowager Cixi, unsatisfied with her tomb, ordered its destruction and reconstruction in 1895. The new tomb was a lavish grandiose complex of temples, gates, and pavilions, covered with gold leaves, and with gold and gilded-bronze ornaments hanging from the beams and the eaves. In July 1928, Empress Dowager Cixi's tomb was occupied by warlord and his army then methodically totalled the place. Then blew up the entrance to the burial chamber, opened Empress Dowager Cixi's coffin, threw her dead corpse on the ground, and stole all the her jewels contained in the coffin.
    To Summarize
All serious matters of state must come after steps 1-13. Remember it is not about history, honor, logic, far-sighted ideas and being fearless, it is about the latest fashion, euruches, clothes, string pulling, revisionist history, women never lying about sexual harassment and backstabbing. Once you commit these ideas to memory you too can learn to be a effeminate fox or weasel and destroy your country, state or family in these easy to remember self-serving steps. No heavy lifting included, no money down and above all everyone else takes the risks and pays the price. Order today and we will throw in this extra gift pack of How to Turn your Son into a Mangina Momma's Boy and Intellectual Eunuch free. Oops, forgot to add my own comment on the above news articles I added.

Just because one female bank in Iceland survived ..... does not mean that women can financially run this world any better than men.

The nicest thing about this all female bank in Iceland is that the women running it said, "Women are not best. Men and women together are best!"

I think she would be horrified her bank is causing so much gender problem. Like she said, "If it looked risky, we didn't do it. That's how we survived"

Risk is necessary in survival at a global sense. We will go down with a gender war before we come to our senses and appreciate what each sex has to offer.

Women tend to be less risk taking than men when dealing with stock portfolios etc.

Means they win less, lose less!

    Strange eh?

This is a reason why perhaps the haddock should be in charge of banks!

Men should do less anti-social jobs!

    Do you mean this?

Edit: I have no agenda in asking you this. I sincerely want your opinion. New Zealand has the jobs separated this way at political level.

There are now quite a few women working in the City in fairly powerful jobs (just not boardroom that often). If anything, they have something to prove and are even more macho and risk taking than the men. Modern women are becoming more masculine. If you doubt that just look outside a pub in the rougher parts of London and see how women start more fights than the men!

The kind of warm, feminine, fluffy mumsy type women aren't normally attracted to high powered banking and finance jobs.
