O Canada lyrics to be reviewed

A Canadian flag flies under the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, where the government announced Wednesday that it wants the wording of the national anthem reviewed. (Adrian Wyld/Canadian Press) Get ready to memorize new words to the national anthem.
Parliament is to be asked to review the "original gender-neutral wording of the national anthem," says the throne speech delivered by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean on Wednesday.
O Canada official lyrics
O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
O Canada includes the lyrics "true patriot love in all thy sons command," and there may be interest in changing that line to something more inclusive.
O Canada, with music composed by Calixa Lavallée in 1880, became the national anthem in 1980, replacing God Save the Queen.
Its English lyrics have been adapted several times over the years, but the current version is based on a poem written in 1908 by Stanley Weir.
It begins: "O Canada Our home and native land! True patriot love thou dost in us command. We see thee rising fair, dear land, The True North strong and free."
The official English version now in use incorporates changes recommended in 1968 by a joint committee of MPs and senators that added the lines "from far and wide" and "God keep our land glorious and free!"
The surprise proposal to review the lyrics had parliamentary observers buzzing. The throne speech gave no indication what prompted the plan.

Do you think O Canada needs to be changed?
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said the initiative to change the lyrics is the kind of "symbolic gesture" the Conservative government makes when it doesn't want to do anything real.
"Anything that makes a national anthem more gender-sensitive is a good thing," he told CBC News.
"But, I mean, no disrespect to those who feel strongly on this issue, but, for heaven's sake, we have some very important challenges and every time the government is asked to do something real, it does something symbolic.
"There's lots of things to do for women that are more important than changing the words of the national anthem, just as there are lots of things to do for pensioners and seniors that are more important than having a Seniors Day."

Re: feminists upset by lyrics of Canadian national anthem
I think that they should make military conscription universal before they consider changing the lyrics to the national anthem.
Do not ever suppose that a small group of people can never change the world. INDEED it is the only thing that ever has.

Re: feminists upset by lyrics of Canadian national anthem
It has been Canada's sons who have spilled their blood in it's defence, the inclusion in the anthem has been more than earned. Let the feminists cry and stamp their feet all they want, just don't yield an inch to these politically pampered gluttons.

The Conservative government has backed down on a proposal to change the lyrics of Canada's national anthem 'O Canada' after a public outcry. (Adrian Wyld/Canadian Press) The federal government, which sparked controversy after suggesting it might make changes to the lyrics of O Canada, has decided to leave the national anthem alone.
"We offered to hear from Canadians on this issue and they have already spoken loud and clear. They overwhelmingly do not want to open the issue," said Dimitri Soudas, a spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office. "The government will not proceed any further to change our national anthem."
The speech from the throne, delivered by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean, said Parliament would be asked to review the "original gender-neutral wording of the national anthem."
O Canada includes the lyrics "true patriot love in all thy sons command," and there was some discussion about changing the line to be less gender-specific. The original words contained the line "thou dost in us command."
The proposal sparked a mass outcry from Canadians who objected to any change to the lyrics.

Re: feminists upset by lyrics of Canadian national anthem
No where in the Anthem does the question 'eh?' appear. Very un-Canadian !!
And being as the French Prime Minister asked to join the Commonwealth in 1946, I think Canada should go back to 'God Save the Queen'. That should make it hard for the feminists to object.
So, 'God Save the Queen, eh?'Last edited by Percy; 5th-March-2010 at 11:33 PM.

Re: feminists upset by lyrics of Canadian national anthem
the feminint PC had a success with the Australian anthem too !
used to be Australian sons let us rejoice for we are young and free ...
this was PC'd to Australian all let us rejoice for we are young and free ..
there were not to many Australian wimyn who had their tits blown off either in The First or Second World War but as in the Olympics they get the same medals anyhow albeit in separate events
in the First World War where there was no conscription in Australia however the spiteful ones sent white feathers to those young men savvy enough to eschew volunteering for the European slaughter fields
Australia believe it or not celebtates the slaughter and defeat at Gallipoli as a nation building event in Australian history or is that herstory to be PC I guess Australian men have been set up for patsys and fall guys ever since sad to say
