BEIJING (AFP) - The little girl who starred at the Olympic opening ceremony was miming and only put on stage because the real singer was not considered attractive enough, the show's musical director has revealed.
Pigtailed Lin Miaoke was selected to appear because of her cute appearance and did not sing a note, Chen Qigang, the general music designer of the ceremony, said in an interview with a state broadcaster aired Tuesday.
Photographs of Lin in a bright red party dress were published in newspapers and websites all over the world and the official China Daily hailed her as a rising star on Tuesday.
But Chen said the girl whose voice was actually heard by the 91,000 capacity crowd at the Olympic stadium during the spectacular ceremony was in fact seven-year-old Yang Peiyi, who has a chubby face and uneven teeth.
"The reason why little Yang was not chosen to appear was because we wanted to project the right image, we were thinking about what was best for the nation," Chen said in an interview that appeared briefly on the news website Sina.com before it was apparently wiped from the Internet in China.
Lin was seen to perform the patriotic song "Ode to the Motherland" as China's national flag was carried into the stadium, a key moment in the three hour ceremony.
"The reason was for the national interest. The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression," said Chen, a renowned contemporary composer and French citizen.
"Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects. But in terms of voice, Yang Peiyi is perfect, each member of our team agreed," he said.
Here's a photo, the right girl is Yang Peiyi:

Re: Chinese Olympic child singing star was a fake: ceremony director
I feel sorry for the little girl who was prevented from singing "because of her looks." I wonder what they told her? "You're not pretty enough?"
Don't even try and tell me that feminists would be happy about this. I guarantee you they will not be. And with good reason.
This isn't as uncommon as you might think...and it doesn't just happen in China.
And it doesn't just happen to girls.

Why exactly am I supposed to give a crap?
I'm not paying for it.
In fact, I'm enjoying the absence of the usual suspects from the General Electric "family".
To Hollywood, and the muisic video industry, illusion is SOP in appealing to
the "average" consumer.
The opening ceremony of the Olympics was sensational.
The simultaneous behavior of the promoters of the Special Olympics, attempting to
jump on the bandwagon, is what's retarded.

That's pretty fucked up but show business is about appeal as much (if not more) as talent.

What about the two Chinese girls who won Gold in the 10 mtr synchonised diving? I bet they were actors too and the real divers were kept in the changing room because they were too fat for the TV.
Then there's the beach vollyball games. They tried to tell us the tide was just one hell of a long way out. Hah!

It was very obvious that she was miming the song when I first saw it during the opening ceremony, but it was still a good opening. I assumed she was the singer, but she was just miming to prevent a major fuck-up by a little girl, turns out I was wrong on that one, but I was also wrong in assuming that it was a tall, slim black woman who sang "Ride On Time", and that turned out to be a fat black woman, and then there's Milli Vanilli

Hah !
Now it seems that some of the Opening Ceremony fire-works were pre-recorded at the rehersals and shown as being actually happening on the night - and some of the others were Computer Generated !
Damned clever these Chinese.
I wonder if London will go a bit better and have most of the competitions done over and over over the next three years so as to get some UK medals.

This is a cultural attitude. Women need plastic surgery to get a decent job. That said, men don't because they do the shit jobs that have nothing to do with looks.

Re: Chinese Olympic child singing star was a fake: ceremony director
Right, but I bet they wouldn't care at all if she were a boy, cause they don't give a damn about males.
It does depend on the job, but men also have to meet certain standards in the show business and such. The song " The Buggles - Video killed the radio star" is about that.
It's ironic that they didn't pick a prettier singer for that final part on top of the globe, cause this man Liu Huan is frankly ugly.

I think the little girl on the right is absolutely adorable. Too bad she's going to grow up thinking that she's so ugly she can't appear in public. Also sad, the little girl on the left (the mimer) will probably grow up to think she doesn't have to work very hard to get a place in the spotlight. Her "looks" will get her whatever she desires. You don't have to look too closely at the picture on the left to see that this little girl already has the look and attitude of a "privileged princess."
Makes me ill.
