Arlene Phillips should be given a second chance, says Harriet Harman
This is from The Mirror.
What I would like to know, is why is the Deputy PM being asked about a fuckin' two-bit TV show during Commons questions? And why is ageism and sexism continually mentioned, yet her ability to do the job isn't?
Harriet Harman yesterday made an amazing attack on BBC bosses over the sacking of Arlene Phillips from Strictly Come Dancing.
The deputy leader, who is also equality minister, said the panelist was a victim of age discrimination.
The 66-year-old choreographer will be replaced by pop star Alesha Dixon, 30, when the show returns in the autumn.
Quizzed about the decision during Commons questions, Ms Harman said: "I think it's absolutely shocking that Arlene Phillips is not going to be a judge on Strictly Come Dancing.
And as equality minister I am suspicious that there is age discrimination there.
"So I'd like to take the opportunity of asking the BBC - it is not too late - we want Arlene Phillips in the next edition of Strictly Come Dancing."
Fans are furious that the male judges - Craig Revel Horwood, 44, Bruno Tonioli, 53, and Len Goodman, 65 - have kept their jobs while the only woman has been axed.
The decision to hire former Mis-Teeq singer Dixon, who won the 2007 contest, has reignited accusations of TV bias against older women presenters.
Newsreader Moira Stuart was dropped from the Andrew Marr show on reaching 60, while Selina Scott, Kate Adie and Anna Ford have also criticised the way bosses treat older women.
Adie, who spent 35 years as a BBC journalist, said in 2001: "They want women with cute faces, cute bottoms and nothing else in between."
A bbc spokeswoman said last night: "Harriet Harman is entitled to her view and of course it is great to know that she's a fan of the show. Strictly Come Dancing appeals to a wide audience and we are always striving to ensure it remains fresh and relevant to our existing audience and to those who may be watching it for the first time.
"Age had absolutely nothing to do with the decision to replace Arlene Phillips on the judging panel.
"The age range of the Strictly presenters, judges and contestants are clear evidence that this would not have played a part.
"The BBC employs numerous mature presenters across the schedule."
Ms Harman's support for Arlene came after Tory MP Nigel Evans called for a debate on the BBC to "try and drag them kicking and screaming into the 21st century on public pay".
He said viewers were set to be consulted on whether the Beeb's "so-called top talent" were worth the money. But he added: "The only way viewers can really come to a judgement on that is if they are told exactly how much they're earning.
"The transparency we are told is now going to lead to perhaps a 40% cut in Jonathan Ross's £6million-a-year pay.
"How he can possibly survive on three and a half million we will never ever know."
Ms Harman agreed that there should not be "lavish spending" at the top of the BBC on mana-gers, governors or celebrities.
She added: "Actually I am slightly concerned that while we hold the BBC to account for the licence payers' money we shouldn't tip over into BBC bashing, which I think has started to colour some of the Opposition's comments."

War reporter, 63, quit BBC after 35 years at 57. One of Beeb's best known faces, but phased out.
Moira Stewart TV's first black woman newsreader walked out of BBC after more than 30 years at 58. Move triggered mass complaints and fury from MPs and other Beeb presenters.
Anna Ford Newcaster, 65, left BBC in 2006 after 30 years presenting the six o'clock and one o'clock bulletins. She was 62. Said she always knew she'd be sidelined over age.
Selina Scott Thinking man's crumpet, 58, got cold shoulder at Five. Replaced by Isla Traquair, 28, and Matt Barbet, 32. Won a reported £250,000 in age discrimination case.Hugh & Mary Discuss Feminist Related Issues (ALL SUBTITLED): http://www.youtube.com/view_play_lis...0081D259987DCD
