    Alberta mom's double-murder trial begins

Mother's 2 young sons found dead in bathtub

Allyson McConnell, 33, is charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of 10-month-old Jayden McConnell and two-year-old Connor McConnell.

The McConnells had separated and were in a custody battle, according to court documents.

The boys' mother was originally from Australia and wanted to move back there with the boys, but their father refused.

Three months before their deaths, a judge ruled the boys had to stay in Canada for the time being.

Shortly after the boys' deaths, someone tried to commit suicide by jumping off an overpass in Edmonton, said police at the time. Police never identified the person, but McConnell was in hospital when she was charged.

She continues to be held at Alberta Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Edmonton.

No doubt Alberta mother drowned her children, the question is why, Crown says

WETASKIWIN, Alta. — On the morning of Feb. 1, 2010, Allyson McConnell sat down at the computer set up on her dining room table and searched the question, “How long does it take to die from strangulation?”
By the end of the day, Ms. McConnell had killed her two children, drowning 10-month-old Jayden and 2 1/2-year-old Connor in the bathtub of the family’s bungalow in Millet, Alta. She then drove into Edmonton and threw herself off an overpass into traffic.

The poor father. He only wanted to be part of the life of his children.

Wife : "And how much for the ones like mine?"
Husband : "That's where they held the auction."

I think this shows that women are generally very well aware of just how important a man's children are to him.

Alberta man says ex-wife drowned sons in tub for revenge

'She left the kids to rot in the bathroom for me to find,' says Curtis McConnell

He said his ex-wife killed the boys because of her hate and anger towards him.
"She left the kids to rot in the bathroom for me to find. She left the wedding ring on the toilet seat."
In a civil lawsuit, McConnell is suing his ex-wife for $940,000, calling her actions "flagrant and outrageous ... malicious and oppressive."
Allyson McConnell's lawyer, Peter Royal, has said the mother tried to commit suicide in a psychiatric hospital last month when she was served with the legal papers.
A four-sentence statement of defence was filed Mar. 7, asking the action be dismissed without costs.
"The defendant denies that any act done by her was calculated so as to cause harm to the plaintiff," the statement reads.

My boss told me this story:
One time he went to a prison to do some sort of ministry thing, and one of the guards told him, "40% of women in prison have been diagnosed with some sort of psychological illness. You know what this means?" To which my boss replied, "The other 60% are out here with us."

Does it matter? That's not the issue - as we all know.

The "pussy-pass" can fool all of the judges some of the time and some of the judges all of the time.

Considering the explosion of female criminality, we'll hear of more and more cases whers the judge is making him/herself vulnerable to legal challenge.

Reminds me of a very similar case, unfortunately:

Theresa Riggi's chilling call to husband before stabbing their 3 children to death | Mail Online

BBC News - Theresa Riggi moved to psychiatric hospital

She stabbed her three children to death over fears she would lose them to her husband in a custody battle.
On the evening of August 2, Riggi spoke to her husband on the phone. Mr Prentice said she accused him of being in collusion with their solicitors and asked if he would take the children away.

On being told she 'left him no choice', Riggi replied 'say goodbye then' and hung up.
Needless to say, excuses were made - her "responsibility was diminished". She was sentenced to eight years in prison, later moved to a 'psychiatric hospital'.

It would appear from the link you've posted above that the same thing has happened here too.

Justice Michelle Crighton rejected Friday a conviction on the more serious charge of second-degree murder.

She told the court she has reasonable doubt on whether Allyson McConnell could form the intent to kill her sons.
I thought it was a jury that decided these things?

If men cannot receive justice in the courts, they will take matters into their own hands.

I don't recognize the legitimacy of these kangaroo courts.

Re: Alberta mom's double-murder trial begins

An Alberta woman who admits to drowning her two young sons in her bathtub was found guilty today of manslaughter.

Justice Michelle Crighton rejected Friday a conviction on the more serious charge of second-degree murder.

"I would describe her as being tormented by the death of her boys, but at the same time confused regarding her role in that," she said.
Crighton told the court she has reasonable doubt about whether Allyson McConnell could form the intent to kill her sons, ages 10 months and two years.

Curtis and Allyson McConnell are shown with sons Connor and Jayden in an undated photo. (Facebook)During the trial, the prosecution argued McConnell killed her boys at the family home in Millet, Alta., as revenge against her husband, Curtis McConnell. The couple had been in a bitter divorce battle.
But the defence said McConnell's mind was so clouded by booze, sleeping pills and severe depression that she couldn't have formed the intent required to convict her of second-degree murder.
'Due to the black hole in the evidence, the court is left not knowing what happened in the McConnell home during the final few days of the McConnell children's lives.'—Justice Michelle Crighton
McConnell testified during her trial that she couldn't remember anything about the events of that cold winter weekend in early 2010.
    Black hole in evidence

"Due to the black hole in the evidence, the court is left not knowing what happened in the McConnell home during the final few days of the McConnell children's lives, including what Allyson's mental state was when she drowned them," Crighton said.
"It is left with a reasonable doubt that she had the specific intent to kill her children," she said.
"The accused is entitled to the benefit of that doubt and, accordingly, she cannot be convicted of second-degree murder."
McConnell will be back in court on May 9 for sentencing.

The Crown expressed disappointment with the decision.

"I think the Crown proved murder, so I'm disappointed in that regard," said prosecutor Gordon Hatch. "But a verdict of murder would not have been any more satisfying in that these boys are dead and we can't do anything about that."
Yep, pills, booze and emotions made the mom not fully accountable. Does that EVER happen in trials where men are accused? EVER????
