50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
From BBC News:
50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
The number of men applying for teacher training has risen sharply because of the recession, says the body responsible for training teachers.
There was a 52% rise in the number of men wanting to be primary school teachers - more than 4,700 in 2009/10, up about 1,500 compared with 2008/09.
Redundancies in the City have prompted the change, says the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).
The number of applicants to teach maths and modern languages has also risen.
'Increasing status'
Traditionally in primary schools there has been a ratio of four female teachers to every male.
But rising unemployment has made the prospect of teaching five to 11-year-olds more attractive, according to the TDA.
A total of 4,746 men applied for the training in England in 2009/10 - up by about 1,500 on 2008/09.
TDA chief executive Graham Holley said: "Teaching is a profession with increasing status that is becoming more and more competitive.
"There has been a sharp rise in applications to teacher training from people working in other professions.
"They recognise that teaching can fulfil their ambitions, provide challenges, and offer rewards such as a competitive salary and great opportunities for career progression."
The TDA is hosting an event in London on Friday to encourage people to become teachers, with Schools Secretary Ed Balls expected to attend.Subscribe to my accounts on DocStoc, Scribd, Twitter and YouTube.

Re: 50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
I am not getting excited.
The numbers are still very low. A 50% increase in zilch is still zilch.
Besides, entering teacher training college is just the first step. They still have to run the gauntlet of the feminist filtering machine before they will be allowed anywhere near the women's domain of the classroom and put in charge of young impressionable minds. Unless they toe the party line and prove themselves compliant manginas, they will never make it.
Getting more men into primary education is no good if those men are just neutered feminist clones. What is needed is free-thinking men with balls who can bring their own life experience and independent knowledge to bear, and teach children how to find out the truth for themselves and create their own values. Unfortunately however these are the sort of men who scare the establishment to bits, and will therefore never get into the classroom.

Re: 50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
There's a big lack of male teachers and rolemodels in primary schools. Also since women in general don't want to provide for men who want to be "full time housemen", men have no other choice then to seek work outside the household such as this profession.

Paul Parmenter lucidly outlines the stark reality of men aspiring to be teachers and having to confront the matriarchal mafia that controls the schooling system.

Re: 50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
Who says these 50% additional men are suitable candidates anyway? Given the impact of the recession on men, many are just likely to be after any old job.
Most of the more intelligent men realise that the environment of your average primary school is incredibly anti-male, so most intelligent men wouldn't even consider such a career. Admittedly the recession will have made a few of them desperate and willing to overlook this, but the fact is that we'll never attract enough quality male teachers until you get rid of the institutionalised sexism and hostility in such facilities and completely change their culture.
It might be true that standards in such schools are spiralling ever lower, but I expect some of these men are sub-standard candidates even by today's low standards, and are perhaps attracted by the prospect of benefiting from "positive" discrimination - something whcih will harm male teachers just as much as it harms women in other sectors. The Rights of Man - A platform for raising issues about sexual discrimination against men in the UK:

Re: 50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
I DEMAND that the male-female ratio of teachers in schools paid for with taxed public funds
match the ratio of male-female students in the student body, REGARDLESS of any proved proficiency by ANY measure.
Sound familiar?

Re: 50% rise in men applying to be primary teachers
Dead right John. The standards of primary education in the UK are abysmal by any measure. This is deliberate policy by the government, who are perfectly happy to let the incompetents run the show and believe all is well with the system. All that is required of children is that they leave primary school heavily indoctrinated in political correctness and the certainty that women know best, and indeed are best. Whether they can read, write or add two and two in their heads is of quite secondary importance.
Few men of any intelligence who could do better for themselves elsewhere would want to plunge into that pit - only the desperate would consider it.
