A superhero flick that's not aimed at chicks

I went to the cinema (for the first time in more than two-years) to see The Dark Knight yesterday.

It's a great flick. I may normally avoid Hollywood's crap but I figured I'd give this one a try and I did in fact like it.

The best thing is the lack of females - butt-kicking, loud-mouthed "independent" ones especially - who invariably shove their way into nearly every damn movie these days. Sure, there is one such character, but...well, I won't spoil it for you. And there is another but she's in about two scenes and I can't even remember her name. And Batman does go all annoyingly 'save teh wimmin' briefly.

Apart from that it's just two or three hours of guys doing stuff like robbing banks, saving the city, having car-chases, beating up baddies, talking with really really deep voices, garotting helicopters, beating up baddies some more, jumping from one skyscraper to another, and ruining someone's day with nothing more than a sharpened pencil.

    Y'know, guy stuff.

And there's some other, more deeper philosophical man-stuff, like the contemplation of moral boundries, self-sacrifice, whether the ends justify the means in administering justice, whether relinquishing the moral high-ground is forgivable in the face of an amoral enemy, if people can be trusted not to recede into atavistic barbarism for the purposes of self-preservation in extreme circumstances, the loyalty of friends, and how to really ruin someone's day with nothing more than a sharpened pencil.

You said a mouthful, brother. The Dark Knight is my new favorite movie. And you're right something... all these other superhero flicks lately are full of feminist crap. The Spider-Man trilogy is full of it. I just wanted Peter Parker to shoot webbing at Mary Jane's mouth. Why does he love that bitch so much? She's the stupidest spoiled whore I've ever seen in a comic-book movie. The Mary Jane in the comics wasn't that bad, so what gives? The poor guy is risking his life for other people, and she has the nerve to whine she's not getting enough attention? Fuck her!

I think I'd like to go and see this one! Thanks for posting your review!

I haven't seen a truly good movie in such a long time!

"Braveheart" has been my favorite for ages.

Re: A superhero flick that's not aimed at chicks

We saw it. It was good, but I'm glad we were kidless for the movie. It was so very, very dark.

I think Heath Ledger was Academy Award good. The rest of the performances were all extremely strong. It was a rock solid show.

I liked how none of the characters were all good or all bad. They were human, and their motivations were very complex. I felt sympathy and compassion for the Joker, that is when I wasn't shuddering watching the things he did. But it wasn't hard to follow, or "artsy" at all. I think this is one of those movies you have to watch again and again to really hear all that it's saying.

Oh, and I felt like hysterically giggling at the scene where there was a certain explosion. Let's just say I was very surprised!

The main chick in the movie was also complex, but for once the female character was the simplest of them all. So very, very shallow. She was definitely not presented as a heroine, or even as a damsel worth rescuing.

Michael Caine as Alfred was awesome. Then again, I don't think I've ever seen him do a role I didn't like.

On a side note....I hate it (really hate it) when they put a female (strong beautiful smart young) for no apparent reason into a movie just so that there is a female. Usually she kisses the male hero at the end of the movie. Sometimes I feel I have already seen every movie as there are alot of cliches going on....

    So weitermachen!
The men's and fathers' movement needs to make sure it never sees females as the enemy,
but only misandry--whether from females or from males.
If not, we'll become like the bigoted feminists that this movement was formed to oppose.

I agree...nothing more painfully boring and disappointing than a tired old cliche of a storyline!

The most offensive thing you can do to a feminist is treat her with FULL equality.
Wife : "I dreamt they were auctioning off dicks. The big ones went for ten dollars and the thick ones went for twenty dollars."
Husband : "How about the ones like mine?"
Wife : "Those they gave away."
Husband : "I had a dream too...I dreamt they were auctioning off pussy. The pretty ones went for a thousand dollars, and the little tight ones went for two thousand."
Wife : "And how much for the ones like mine?"
Husband : "That's where they held the auction."

Re: A superhero flick that's not aimed at chicks

Sorry to be the arsehole of this thread, but technically, Batman is not a superhero, he's just a guy in a costume, he has no super powers.

I saw the film, and although it started off good, I thought it wasn't very good overall. Bale's gruff voice got on my nerves, he only put it on when in the Batman costume, but he even uses it when talking to Morgan Freeman's character, who knows who his alter-ego is, so why put the bloody voice on?
And speaking of Morgan Freeman's character, how the hell did so many people know Batman's real identity in the film? It seemed to me that it was only the bad guys who didn't know it was Bruce Wayne.

The bank robbery at the start was class, and I was surprised at Heath's performance as the Joker, I expected it to be shit, and thought the critics were just too scared to slag off a dead person's performance, but he was really good, he played it very well.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I've lost all faith in Batman movies since the second one, the first was class, it had a comic book feel, what with the way people were dying with a smile on their face, but now it's all gunshots and explosions.

Anyway, on the subject of cliches, I was recently watching The Forbidden Kingdom with Chan and Li, which I would recommend (but if are going to watch it, stop reading, because I'm about to spoil it), and in the movie there were good guys and bad guys, the usual, and there was one woman on the good team and one woman on the bad team (Li Bingbing, the best looking baddie in years). So I'm watching it, and I'm thinking "The good chick is only there to take out the bad chick because they won't want to show a woman being killed by a man" but of course, I was forgetting that this movie is chock-full of Chinese influence, so it didn't quite pan out as I expected, in the end, Jackie Chan threw the bitch off a cliff, I was well surprised, delightfully, not because she died, but because they weren't afraid to show a man do it, and it wasn't the only goodie woman that done it.
I love Chinese cinema, and I have to say, the women are treated a lot more equally than their western counterparts, they kick ass, start fights and save the day just as much as the men, but without the pathetic patronising attitude of the west.

    Me too.

Interesting, why was Braveheart you're favourite also Tera?

For me it was albeit a romanticized version of the historical Celts standing up to their eternal oppressors - the English.

This has modern day symbolic relevance and activist implications that transcends history!!! It proves that whatever the overwhelming odds we can prevail over greater numbers and "corrosive influence."
