Military crew-cuts

This paragraph from Jason O'Conal's book The War Against Men Has Been Declared recently caught my attention:

Why, for instance, should female recruits not be subject to the same de-individualising crew-cuts as male recruits? There is nothing outside of traditional gender roles that suggests such allowances. If it is too degrading for a woman, it must also be judged too degrading for a man.

Searching Google about the subject, lead me to this page: Long Hair and the Army!

This question was posed:

I have recently joined the Territorial Army medical corp and I have been informed that I have to shave off my beard and cut my long hair! As it is only a part time commitment, unless I am called up to the front line of a war, why do I have to do this? I am willing to cut my hair if I am required to go to war, but I can't understand why I am required to do so now, esp as the female soldiers are allowed to have long hair!

And this reply was by far the most striking:

The basis of army training is conformity - everyone must look and act the same, and individuality is no conducive to army routine. As far as women are concerned, a woman's hair is far more an integral part of her personality and self image, and making what is often a radical change to her appearence would be conteractively traumatic. It may seem sexist, but it is based on sound psychological principles for both sexes, and that is why these rules still exist.

He(or she) tells us that:

The basis of army training is conformity - everyone must look and act the same

But clearly his definition of 'everyone' stretches only as far as men:

As far as women are concerned... a radical change to her appearence would be conteractively traumatic.

But apparently it is justifiable:

It may seem sexist, but it is based on sound psychological principles for both sexes, and that is why these rules still exist.

This double standard doesn't 'seem' sexist - it is sexist!

Rules are made for men. Women don't like rules and have a hard time with any rules that restrict them.

How about the last comment? It's not surprising if it's true. Some women will put everyone through hell in order to save her own reputation and keep her boyfriend.. Had she cared about him she wouldn't have been sneaking around behind his back.

that bullshit Tailhook scandal did even more damage in terms of giving women excessive priviliges at the expense of men. Later, it turns out that the cunt that cried rape, really was a slut-ho who consentually fucked around behind her fiance's back with tons of guys, and that she lied in order to make herself look good to her fiance cuz she got preggers from her skanky behavior. Of course, this never made mainstream news and the navy never reversed any of its misandrist policies because of it.
Sure some guys are as bad when is comes to screwing around. But they don't usually ruin dozens of innocent lives trying to avoid the consequences.

Oh how true all that is - how very very true. If only men were permitted to be as outwardly critical of female failings as women are permitted to be about the faults of us guys. That's a rreal back to front type of so called equality is it not? Thank goodness for internet forums - so much letting off of pent up steam.....

The other day I told a woman that I could so easily understand the reasons for domestic violence and exacly why some men are pushed to the very limit by women's behaviour and that male flesh and blood can only stand so much and something involuntaily snaps inside the men against all their better judgment - and I met with a major volcanic eruption. It seems that only women are allowed the luxury of wreaking vengance in the name of domestic violence irrespective of guilt or innocence - that's a mere bagatelle as far as they are concerned.

Dickens was right when he made Mr Bumble utter the immortal words: "The law, sir? The law is a ass!"

Re: Military crew-cuts

What a lot of nonsense. Conformity indeed! "individuality is not conducive to army routine". Whoever wrote that is living in the dark age or is completely friggin' nuts. This is the TA we are talking about here. Weekend warriors.

As for women's hair being 'traumatic' when cut off, it didn't seem to faze Sinead O'Connor. Many women have hair shorter than many men do. What would they do if a female recruit had her hair shorn all by herself? Charge her with a self-inflicted trauma?

There is no clinical evidence whatsoever to show any psychological trauma from a friggin' haircut. And if that scares the bejesus out of them, what are they going to do when the bullets start flying?

Re: Military crew-cuts

By the way, my son, the Film Star (Tom Cruise looks a bit like him) is making a WW2 film in Melbourne at the moment. (Set in the Pacific war). He is playing a part as a US Marine and has had his hair cut short for the filming. It is quite a passable trim! (Fine pair of shoulders on that lad )
