  • Great Britain Harriet Harman backing move to ban the term chairman for being 'sexist'

    From The Telegraph:

Harriet Harman backing move to ban the term chairman for being 'sexist'

Harriet Harman is backing plans to get the term chairman banned for being "sexist".

Miss Harman, the leader of the Commons, is supporting a proposal to make MPs refer instead to the gender-neutral "chair" or "occupant of the chair" and "panel of chairs" rather than chairman's panel.

She has endorsed a recommendation by the parliamentary committee, set up to reform the House of Commons. MPs are likely to vote on this and other proposals on February 22.

The founder of the Plain English Campaign, Chrissie Maher, said: "Being respectful isn't about using pompous terms that just get in the way of common sense.

"I'm sure it will be obvious whether it's a man or a woman in the chair. I can't see how this is reform or how it helps equality."

A spokesman for Miss Harman insisting she was simply allowing MPs to debate and vote on the recommendations of the committee on parliamentary reform, set up by Gordon Brown to 'lift politics to a higher standard'.

"This is not the Government putting its views forward," added the spokesman. "It is the views of a cross-party committee that may go to the vote of the House."

Conservative equality spokesman Mark Harper said: "At a time when confidence in our political system is at an all-time low in the wake of the expenses scandal, and our economy is in a huge mess, you would have thought Harriet Harman would have better things to be doing.

"A serious government would spend its time on real issues of substance."

Yes indeedy, and it says a lot about wee Gordy Broon, that he hasn't told her to shut her fookin pie hole.
