Re: Women need to Speak Out on Feminism and the Hateful Ideology it Represents
I do not think feminism helped my generation of women. They have perpetuated the idea that women are basically victims, but simultaneously, told us we could go out and do anything we wanted in the world. Those two concepts conflict with each other.
I don't think the focus on career helped women at all. Most of my single women friends thought they could have this great career, but the reality is, most of them are living paycheck to paycheck, and quite a few are chronically unemployed. They wish they were married or had a partner. They are all around 40 years old now, with no husband/long term partner in sight. And living in near poverty. The harsh economic reality of our times makes it difficult to live on your own and be self-supporting. Many of these women chased after careers in male-dominated industries, so they could prove it in a "man's world". The irony is, some of the best job security out there is in traditionally female careers, such as childcare and nursing - careers these arrogant women shunned as not being good enough for them.
I am a returning college student, in my 40s, and I sit in classes with women in their early 20s. They all think so very hip to brag about how they don't want kids, hate kids, don't need a man, blah blah blah. Its as if they think people will say "wow, what an independent, smart woman you are!". But all I can wonder is, what will happen to these young women when they graduate from college and find out their degrees do not automatically translate into great jobs. How will they live alone and support themselves? What will they do if they get older, decide they want kids, but its too late to have them? Many of these young women think its hip and trendy to do international adoption. The reality is, adoptions can be expensive, there are no guarantees and many countries routinely close their borders to outside adoption. Its also very hard to adopt after you are 40 years of age. I personally know one woman whose famous words of "I am too smart for any man" reached age 50, tried to adopt and found out she couldn't. That it was too late. She was too old. Her only remaining chances to play "mommy" at that point, would be to foster parent an emotionally disturbed teenager.
I frequent lots of infertility forums, since I'm a woman who has suffered from infertility. I've seen many women get angry about fertility advances made in male fertility. They insist that reproductive science should only focus on women, not men. I have to explain to them that helping men conceive children also helps the female partners of those men to have children.
