I am sure the business brains surrounding the Beckhams already have dollar signs ringing in their eyes. A fourth football-loving Beckham boy would have been nice but nothing to write home about. But a girl Beckham? The marketing possibilities are endless. But I bet that’s not why Victoria Beckham wanted a girl. She just wants someone more like her than those boys and who can possibly blame her for that?

Girls can do anything. The boys have decided to stop going to fight wars and protect you or even earn money for you. They are saying let the girls do all that while we go our own way and watch the mayhem coming and you collapse in tears wondering how this all happened.

I know how they feel for I have three boys and one girl. When I had my first son Raymond 14 years ago, I was convinced he was a girl. I couldn’t imagine myself having a boy. When I called my mother after giving birth to tell her I’d had a boy and not a girl she said, 'Oh dear. I hope you’re not too disappointed.’ But I adjusted. I just assumed the next one would be a girl.

I'm sure that Raymond Cavendish and his brothers will be very pleased to see their mother publishing her preferences to the nation; for sure, you do them proud, sister!

As the father of a boy, however, I beg to differ.

My mother always wanted a girl until she saw others' daughters and her three sons (including myself) and made a good comparison. She said she'll have the best of both worlds with sons, because each might get married with a woman and she'll be like a daughter to her. She knows that if she had three daughters, they would never want to know anything about her again after getting married. She says that we boys are family men who like to keep everyone protected and together much more than girls. I'm glad I had a mother who appreciated having sons. She definitely reaps the benefits of having three upstanding members of society, one of who has grown into adulthood and gets along on his own with his wife and two who are on their way to probably bigger and better things than the first one. There's pride in knowing that you have three children who aren't going to leech money left and right, but try to keep their heads straight.
