    Sweden will not send a candidate to the Miss Universe contest in Mexico, it has been announced. Organizers of Miss Sweden say the international competition is too old fashioned.

    "The modernization of the international competition has been significantly slower than the Swedish contest, although we see signs of change on horizon. Until the parent organization catches up we have chosen not to participate this year," organizer Panos Papadopoulos said in a statement on Wednesday.

    The decision follows revelations that the current Miss Sweden, Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, posed in a swimsuit for the Swedish edition of men's magazine FHM. Papadopoulous told The Local earlier this week that the pictures were out of line with the contest's new modern image, adding he was considering removing her crown.

    Wednesday's statement did not link the decision to withdraw to Winqvist's poses in FHM, but blamed the decision on criticism in Sweden "that we are sending candidates of this calibre to Miss Universe."

    The new, feminist Miss Sweden contest has no swimwear section. The focus has shifted to attracting "intelligent and well-educated candidates," who are expected to be representatives of and role models for the youth of Sweden.

    It is not clear from the statement whether Winqvist will retain her Swedish title. The Local has unsuccessfully sought the contest organizers for a comment.

    Maybe these Swedish women should try embracing their "feminine side" before it's too late. Of course, that's not very likely to happen, so a good burka store would make a sound investment.

    Come on, guys. I don't see what the problem with THIS is. So they think it's better to grade women based on their intellectual capabilities/achievements, as opposed to their looks. That is in no way anti-male.

    Isn't it a beauty contest though? and as such would not the contestants intellectual capabilities/achievements be somewhat irrelevant to the contests overall purpose, which is presumably to find the most beautiful woman, why discriminate against beautiful women who are non intellectuals in a contest which is, at the end of the day, more about the way they look than anything else.


    Whilst I would agree with you that it's not particularly anti male, it does serve to illustrate the irrational nature of the feminist.

    Just in case nobody noticed, there's a jump of 5 years in this thread.

    If Sweden was a basket-case 5 years ago, what else is new?

    I need to more research before starting a thread entitled - "WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT SWEDEN?"

    Maybe Sweden is the bogeywoman that will sneak up on us while we sleep and sever our manhood.

    Just nuke Stockholm. The population is only 2 million after all. (just joking).
