Sky Sports presenters' sexist diatribe at female linesman

Sky Sports presenters score an own goal as microphone picks up sexist diatribe against female linesman - and Apprentice star Karren Brady

Sky Sports presenters' sexist diatribe at female linesman and Apprentice star Karren Brady | Mail Online

Sky Sports presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys were at the centre of a sexism row last night after they questioned whether a female linesman knew the offside rule during a Premier League football match.

The commentators, who apparently believed their microphones were switched off, were recorded making disparaging remarks about Sian Massey, 25, before Liverpool’s Premiership clash with Wolves yesterday.

They also criticised Apprentice star and West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady who had yesterday written about sexism in a newspaper column.

Commenting on Ms Massey, Mr Keys said: ‘Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.’

Mr Gray, a former Scottish international footballer, replied: ‘Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule.’

Mr Keys replied: ‘Course they don’t. I can guarantee you there will be a big one today. Kenny (Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish) will go potty. This isn’t the first time, is it? Didn’t we have one before?’

Later in the exchange, Mr Keys said: ‘The game’s gone mad. Did you hear charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.’

Ms Brady had said she had ‘experienced sexism at its rankest, lies about my personal life and a level of calculated mischief that is simply appalling’.

Asked about the pundits’ remarks, she said: ‘I think this just sums up everything I said in my column.’

During the game, which Liverpool won 3-0, Ms Massey angered Wolves by refusing to rule Raul Meireles offside before he set up Liverpool’s first goal. The replay showed that she made the correct decision.

When The Mail on Sunday put the transcript to Mr Keys, he said: ‘I have no recollection of that. I have no idea what you are talking about.

'My recollection is that I wished the young lady all the best.’

When told a recording existed of the conversation, he said: ‘If you have a tape then you don’t need me to talk to you.’

Last night The Mail on Sunday sent a transcript and a copy of the recording to a Sky Sports spokeswoman.

She was not able to confirm or deny the veracity of the clip, which was provided to this newspaper by an anonymous source.

Mr Gray could not be reached last night.

Re: Sky Sports presenters' sexist diatribe at female linesman

I heard a recording of this played on the radio yesterday, officials get stuff wrong (though apparently not on this occasion) all the time and get stick from all angles, if they had not used the fact that she is a woman then there should not have been a problem, unfortunately they did.

I think sacking Andy Grey is a bit over the top though.

This whole hyperbolic saga was off-air and ultimately Sky are looking to protect their brand in Gray's sacking.

I noticed a number of feminist types calling for Andy Gray to not only apologise to the female linesman, but to women generally. This is classic opportunism displayed by the pack mentality of feminism and it usually follows grovelling concessions made (as in the case of Lawrence Summers) whereby Sky or the FA will pour several million pounds into some female sporting programme as a consequence.

In the Sun, a lowbrow rag, there's an illustrative example of the hypocrisy surrounding this story. A cartoon depicts Karen Brady, West Ham vice-chairman, feigning fury, as she sexually assaults Gray by kicking him in the groin. So the Sun's idea of highlighting his supposed sexism is to counter it with misandry??

Ironically, Carol McGiffin, who regularly appears on ITV's 'Loose Women,' a programme where female sexism, chauvinism and misandry (lot's of inciting talk and 'confessions' about violence against men and sexually mutilating them) are the staple diet for it's viewers - said herself that if it had been women saying the same about men it never would have raised an eyebrow, let alone caused such a furore. True enough. And if the same standards had been applied then practically every female presenter/guest of the dozens who have worked on that show should have been sacked also. Extrapolate the same standard of guilt to the rest of the media and you'd have very few women working in it.

This is a point I had intended to make when commenting this morning but I was running a bit late.

The women on the TV shows you mention make the kind of statements they do publicly and deliberately, I’ve heard these women make statements such as: “men are useless men are redundant/unnecessary, pathetic, childish, abusive” etc etc
The TV companies they work for have no problem with it at all; in fact it would seem that it is encouraged.
The big difference with Grey and Keys is that they were two men who believed them selves to be having a private conversation and it’s safe to say they would not express these views on air.

Sky could easily have distanced themselves from these views, the sacking was an act of cowardice.

Andy Gray has since been sacked. Reading the Daily Mail, today, I found a particularly good short letter written in, ironically mentioning 'Loose Women'. It read somewhere along the lines of: "I condemn the remarks, but things have been blown out of proportion. You only have to watch the show 'Loose Women', and you'll find a barrage of anti-male remarks, to which noone ever bats an eyelid. Let's have some balance."

    My sentiments entirely....

Now Richard Keys has resigned after a showdown with Sky bosses. Although I suspect he was given an ultimatum: resign or be fired!

How many more male sacrifices will be served up to satisfy the fragile sensibilities of this woman? Not to mention a growing horde of assorted opportunists joining the feeding frenzy.

On Sky news itself, I heard two male newsreaders nervously discussing the issue, and one feigned enthusiasm at how an upsurge of interest from women in becoming referees and linesmen had arisen since the whole storm in a teacup began. There sounds the death knell for one of men's last bastions to fall before the onslaught of interfering harridans and feminists spitefully begruding men any retreat from their relentless domineering agenda.

The last sanctuary a man will eventually have will be the confines of his very own mind. Oh wait, not even that's sacrosanct - political correctness and feminism have already made destructive inroads there too (for the majority) and essentially lease that out to the indoctrinated host, as long as he complies with 'the rules' that is.

Top rated remark at “Mail online”.......

Can we now assume the "Loose Women" panelists and producer will be similarly sacked for continually making offensive comments against men?

The meme that she got all of her decision correct is a lie. I watched the game. Yes, she was right on that one goal. Nearly all of her other decisions were awful.

Andy Gray and Richard Keys are pathetic dinosaurs. I'm still waiting for a real apology

    By Jacquelin Magnay

Andy Gray and Richard Keys are pathetic dinosaurs. I'm still waiting for a real apology – Telegraph Blogs

When the blood-splattered knife arrived in the mail I was startled and annoyed. But being told ”to go home and wash the dishes” by Australian football star Danny Frawley was worse.

The bloody knife represented the frustration, chauvinism and anger of a male football fan when I was in the midst of battling for gender-equal dressing room reporting rights at the Human Rights Commission back in 1993. But the cutting words of Frawley, broadcast nationally in 2007 were as heavyweight as the suds he wanted me to dip my hands into: disappointingly depressing.

Somehow after winning the human rights case and establishing the right for women to have the same access as men, I thought we had moved on from justifying women’s presence in football codes in Australia. Certainly we now had a legal framework.

But Frawley was upset that I had asked a club captain some hard questions about leadership capabilities while the club was beset with drug issues. So in his mind, it was easier to send me to the dirty plates than acknowledge off-field problems.

Arriving in England a year ago, I was pleased to see lipstick and football combined at much the same high level – women commentating, officiating, making decisions.

Had England escaped the misogyny and chauvinism rampant in Australia and the United States (as evidence by extreme harassment suffered there by my friends Lisa Olsen and Karen Rosen)? It appears not.

The sexist opinions of Sky Sports’ middle-aged dinosaurs Andy Gray and Richard Keys were simply wrong. Again, it is a bunch of blokes feeling threatened. Their pointed rant – calling trailblazing official Wendy Toms ”……. hopeless as well” – belittled Sian Massey by claiming she didn’t understand the offside rule. They were also condescendingly trite to West Ham director Karren Brady, saying ”do me a favour, love”.

But the response to all of this was also wrong.

”Gray and Keys say sorry” trilled the headline. Uh? Did I miss something here? It appears they apologised to Sky Sports so they could keep their jobs. Was the apology because they were caught out? I haven’t yet seen any sincere public words to Massey, Toms or Brady.

All morning male radio commentators had been excusing the pair, explaining how easy it is to be caught on air unexpectedly. Others reckoned the fact the broadcasters didn’t swear and call Massey a bitch meant everything was OK.

The argument should be about the legitimacy of women in sport. Massey has every right to be officiating and if she makes a mistake, like every official does, it has nothing to do with her gender.

In this case she did a terrific job, getting a close call correct. No surprise there. Brady has every right to comment about her experiences in the game, and as she so perceptively says, Gray and Keys’ response summed it all up. No surprise there either.

Memo to Keys and Gray. Women are not frail. We can take criticism for our actions. But with that wimpish excuse for an apology, it’s Keys and Gray who are ducking for cover. Too busy washing the dishes, boys?

    * Jacquelin Magnay is the Telegraph’s Olympics Editor. She won a landmark case in the Human Rights Commission that made it illegal for sporting clubs to discriminate against media on the basis of gender.

Yes, the hypocrites have come crawling out of the woodwork on this one. It now seems that men are not allowed to speak their minds, and free speech is a thing of the past, thanks to the pathetic weakness of women who cannot tolerate criticism or any kind of adverse comment. If the sexes were reversed, the only comments we would be hearing would be "Men, where is your sense of humour?"

I note they critisised a wimmin and so I read both of the men have been sacked by their bosses.
So, the media shows it's true colours, don't piss HER off no matter what you say.

It is about time that the media stood up and laid their misandric cards on the table.
